The man. The myth. The legend.

I enjoyed this example a poster at another site pointed out when someone dove into the usual right wing talking points on the rich carrying a heavier tax burden...

QuoteThe only reason this is true is because the richest %1 have gotten richer, while the bottom 99% have remained relatively the same.
To illustrate this:
There are 100 kids in a classroom, each student is given a certain amount of marbles. So student 1 gets 20 marbles, student 2 gets 20 marbles, etc... Lets say for the sake of the example that the bottom 99 students have a combined total of 1980 marbles, while only 1 student has 849 marbles of his own, he's the "1%". At the end of the year, the teacher demands that students return:
10% of your marbles if you have less than 9 marbles
15% of your marbles if you have less than 36 marbles
25% of your marbles if you have less than 86 marbles
28% of your marbles if you have less than 179 marbles
30% of your marbles if you have less than 388 marbles
35% of your marbles if you have more than 388 marbles

Lets asume that every student in the 99% has 20 marbles, so they each give back 15% of their marbles. The collective unit will give back 297 marbles. The 1% student will give back 35% of his marbles, so he gives back 297 marbles.

Both the 99% and the 1% share the tax burden. They each contribute 50% of their total marbles their teacher gets.

Now lets say that the 1% student uses the leverage he has with his remaining 552 marbles to gain another 552 marbles the following year, while the 99% of students were only able to make up a little more of what they gave up last year, 6 marbles each.

So now the bottom 99% have a total of 2277 marbles, and the 1% student has 1104.
The bottom 99% gives a total of 342 marbles
The top 1% gives 387 marbles.

So now the teacher was given 53% of the marbles by the 1% student while the remaining 99% gave her 47% of the marbles.

The 1% student starts complaining that he shares more of the tax burden than the bottom 99% combined. Is he justified in doing so?

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

QuoteHe called on Attorney General Eric Holder to resign over the Fast and Furious operation, accusing him of "sheer incompetence." He slammed the Obama administration for everything from rules on the scimitar-horned oryx to the president's past comments.

"I happily cling to my guns and my God," Perry said, "even if President Obama thinks that that is a simpleminded thing in his elitist heart."

He went on:

"In the myopic world of the liberals, guns are responsible for evil instead of the perpetrator of evil. But criminals are not bound by our laws. That's what makes them criminals. When a crimninal breaks into your home I'll let the liberals call the lawyer. I'm going to call Smith & Wesson."

In Perry's view, "Armed and law-abiding citizens are a greater deterrent to violent crime than 1,000 laws passed by Congress."[\quote]

Rick Perry.

maybe im an elistist too but yes clinging to a fairy tale about a ghost in the clouds and a piece of metal used to kills things is pretty much the definition of simpleminded
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

Perry is entitled to his opinions.  What's incredibly disturbing is there's millions of Texans who agree with him to an extent that they're willing to pull a lever in his favor.

rjs246

I actually think that's the most coherent thing I've ever seen him say. At least it shows the capacity for linear thought.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

Let them eat bootstraps.

Sgt PSN

I actually agree completely with that last line.

ice grillin you

crime rates dont go down as the amount of legal gun ownerhip goes up

guns deter crime as much as the death penalty deters murder

criminals dont stop becoming criminals because they think someone they committ a crime against might have a gun

you wanna say guns can protect you against crime then id agree...but they dont lower the crime rate one bit

george zimmerman wasnt scared to approach trayvon martin even tho he probably carried a preconcieved notion that all young blacks packed heat

Considering South Korea also has one of the largest militaries in the world, let them handle that shtein themselves.
