I know this is heresy to this crowd but we have switched to Turkey bacon.  And I like it.   :P

reese125

same here...have been for a while. even made my way over to the turkey ground beef as well.

now go buy italian turkey sausage and fire it up on the grill. slap some spicy mustard on it...good night!

Sgt PSN

turkey sausage is pretty good but i just can't get into the turkey bacon.  not that i think it tastes bad.  i like it.  i just happen to love good ol' fashioned greasy, fatty pig bacon more.

i'm all about improving my diet and eating healthier but there's a few things that i'm not open to compromise on and bacon is one of them.

i'm a fat ass and i get what i deserve.   I  maintain around 220 i'm 5'11 so i'm not exactly huge, but not normal.  I'm 2 years away from being 30 and dont like how my metabolism is supposed to change at some point here.  I've maintained this weight for the past 8 years, but its not worth it and its time i get control of myself.  Just dont like this pain.  I had a MRI done before, but they didnt see shtein, i just dont want to farg my body up more than it already is.

You looked pretty damm good in that speedo when we went to that...............oh shtein sorry.  My bad.

Did you get that hernia thing checked?  I had hernia surgery almost to the day last year.  No idea how I got it.  Sucked.  It was kind of surreal.  I go into get it checked shortly after I got it and the next thing I know I'm in the hospital having surgery.  Whole thing was like 12 days from discovery to surgery.  Surgery was easy but the recovery was a bitch.  I was back surfing in two months - actually surfed with Ryan and Andrew my first time back in the water.  Walked like a mofo to get back in shape.  Stayed away from the weights for about 6 months.
Nah, once i stopped my attempts at working out i was fine.  Shortly after that wonderful injury, i snapped my toe and figured i'd go ahead and let it heal for 2 weeks.  It's about that time to give it a go again

it's pretty common for people to pack on a few lbs over the winter since we tend to be less active thanks to the cold weather and between thanksgiving and capitalismas, we eat like a bunch of pigs.  normally my winter weight gain was something like 4-7 lbs.  nothing major.....until this year.  back in october i weighed 195, mostly lean pounds.  in mid january i jumped on a scale for the first time since then and was a havas-like 223.  at 71" tall, the most i'm supposed to weigh and remain in standards is 197.  so 223 lbs was a big problem.

so i decided to make some drastic changes to my diet.

breakfast - wake up 15 min earlier and have a bowl of cereal or a bagel.  on the way to work, eat a banana.

mid-morning -  a few carrot sticks or a cup of mixed fruit.

lunch - mostly either tuna fish or egg salad on wheat.  2 sammiches and some fruit or chips.  for variety, maybe some top ramen or a can of soup instead of the sandwiches.

mid-afternoon - more carrot sticks or fruit.

dinner - whatever the farg i want.  salmon, steak, pizza, tacos, etc, etc.

also, i've began drinking a lot more water and juice (real oj and real cranberry) and a lot less soda.  in fact, pertty much the only soda i've had in the last 6 weeks was a little splash with my makers.

the result after 45 days without really increasing my activity level has been a loss of 21.5 pounds.  so basically, the next big shtein i take will have me back down within standards.  in addition, i've got tons more energy throughout the day and because the stuff i'm eating for lunch is so cheap, i've managed to knock almost $50 off my grocery bill.  so i guess you could say that even though i'm losing so much weight, my wallet is getting pretty fat.  lolololololololololololololololololol

Okay so I've heard a lot of good things about P90x.  Has anyone here tried it and for anyone who knows about it as my main goal is muscle gain is this something I should stay away from or is this good at adding muscle as well as losing fat?

i have a buddy at work who's doing it and he said it's hard as farg but he's already noticing a difference.  fat turning to muscle, sliming down in fatty areas, etc, etc.  says he's having a good time with it.

in semi-related news.....much like in sports, being 33 makes me an "old man" because being a marine really is a young man's thing.  for the most part though, i've kept myself in decent shape despite the fact that my knees are shot after having a couple surgeries on them along with spending 6yrs in the grunts which basically meant i walked every farging where i went and carried all my shtein in my pack.  so as a result, the wear and tear has taken it's toll on my knees, legs, back, etc, etc and there are some days where getting out of bed is painful.  so a bunch of the younger marines.....like 18-22 yrs old decided to play football after work.  i went with and absolutely wore them the farg out on the field.  they were taking turns trying to cover me when i was on offense and they couldn't.  they were trying anything to out run me when i was on defense and they couldn't.  2 hours later they were worn out so i called them a bunch of hoydas for letting an old man break them down so much and then to rub it in, i semi-sprinted to my car.

then i got in my car and i cried because my entire farging body was aching from head to toe.  stopped at the drug store on my way home and bought the economy size tub of icy hot, a heat pad and some motrin to ease the swelling in my knees.  if those bastiches would have wanted to try and run one more play i'm pretty sure i would have died on the spot.

i'm seriously in a lot of pain right now.  but it was worth it.

I have seen so many war movies with heads carrying those packs on their back that I always wonder what those  friggin things weigh.... and are you held to a certain limit?

I have to imagine it differs in which unit your in, but I could never imagine carrying that shtein for long periods of time

Eagaholic

Ha. Sarge, let us know how much time it takes to recover (if you ever do). Seriously, I do know what you're talking about. It's been probably 3 years since I could do any kind of a real lower body work out because of my knees.

you're only limited by how much weight you actually want to carry.  as long as it fits in your pack, you can throw a tv in there if you want.  but the minute is slows you down, expect the other guys in your fire team/squad/platoon to throw it off a cliff.

alot also depends on what you're doing and what gear you're required to have with you.  everyone tries to scale their packs down as much as possible to reduce weight but that also comes with consequences (think black hawk down when they were getting ready to go out on a mission and they told that one kid that his sappy plates were only going to weigh him down.  so he left them and got shot.)  and it's not just the packs themselves......in fact, i'd say that the pack alone isn't really all that heavy.  i doubt mine ever weighed more than 40 or 50 lbs but i never threw it on a scale to be certain.  of course, if it rained then you're farged because that means that your half of the tent (we use newer, lighter gear now but when i was a grunt, our tents were issued in halves.  when it's time to set them up, you pair up with someone else and snap them together.)  anyway, the half of a tent that we carried was a thick canvass and was heavy.  and if it rained and you didn't do a good job waterproofing it then you had that extra water weight to carry too.

but like i said, the pack was only part of it.  there was your kevlar vest, your weapon, canteens, magazine/w ammo, kevlar helmet, etc, etc.  all that shtein added up.  a full combat load was probably in the area of 150 lbs.  and on an average day in the field, we'd probably walk about 10 total miles.  of course, this is also over rough terrain, through creeks and shallow rivers, up hill, down hill, blah blah blah.  and then there's digging a fighting hole which is roughly the size of 2 caskets stacked on top of each other.  and you get a shovel that's not much bigger than a large spoon to dig it with.  good times.  and you get rewarded with a couple hours of sleep either in your hole or on a half inch thick mat (similar to a yoga mat) flat on the ground.

i'm seriously amazed at the guys who came in the corps with me as grunts and are still doing it 15 years later.  those guys are farging maniacs.
