Philly seeks 10,000 men to guard streets

Excerpt:

QuotePHILADELPHIA - The city's embattled police chief, acknowledging that police alone cannot quell a run of deadly violence, has called on 10,000 black men to patrol the streets to reduce crime.

Sylvester Johnson, who is black, says black men have a duty to protect more vulnerable residents. He wants each volunteer to pledge to work three hours a day for at least 90 days.

"It's time for African-American men to stand up," Johnson told the Philadelphia Daily News, which first reported the story Wednesday. "We have an obligation to protect our women, our children and our elderly. We're going to put men on the street. We're going to train them in conflict resolution."

I wish my mom had bought me an assault rifle when I was a kid... oh, wait, my Dad actually bought me a pump action 12 gauge shotgun for my 12th birthday. Just what every 12 year old wants.

QuoteThe 14-year-old was taken into custody after police searched his bedroom in the Philadelphia suburbs on Wednesday evening. He had talked about mounting a Columbine-type attack at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, authorities said.
The weapons included a 9 mm assault rifle that the teenager's mother had recently bought for him, Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. said. Prosecutors are reviewing her actions.
Police also found about 30 air-powered guns, plus swords, knives, hand grenades, a bomb-making book, videos of the 1999 Columbine attack in Colorado and violence-filled notebooks, Castor said. The weapons were plainly visible in the boy's bedroom, Castor said.

Proactive parenting indeed.

Philly raises rent on Boy Scouts from one dollar to market rate ($200,000); by law, the city cannot rent to an organization that discriminates.  The Boy Scouts don't allow gays.  Or atheists, but that's not mentioned here.

I don't even feel particularly good about them renting a place out for $199,999 under the market rate to a private organization that doesn't discriminate. Maybe people would feel better about paying the high city taxes if the city was a little more responsible with its money (and income-generating property).
