isn't the salary cap going up at the end of this season for teams? wouldn't it be smart for dawkins to wait to be signed then when we have more money to offer?

Dawkins knows as well as anyone how this team works. The cap space doesn't impact the team's offer in any way. If he's not signed it's not because he's waiting for the team to have the room to up the offer.

Mark Eckel is the sole source for this story.  Brookover's clip in the Inquirer simply cites Eckel; he's got no intel of his own.

The offer jives with what ATL paid Milloy. So obviously the Eagles started with that deal and will likely be willing to work up the ladder. You never offer the best deal on the first shot.

The Trenton Times reports the early word is Philadelphia Eagles S Brian Dawkins is less than enamored with the team's initial contract extension offer.

Trenton Times as in, Eckel again?  This whole fargin' thread is based on Eckel.  Until something turns up from a reputable source, I'll move along.

Considering how much they pay Jevon Kearse, $4.5m over 2 years is not exactly generous.

Frankly, I'm concerned he'll be offended.

QuoteEagles Notes | Dawkins confirms talks over contract

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Brian Dawkins confirmed upon his arrival at Lehigh University yesterday that his agent, Jim Steiner, has been talking to the Eagles about a contract extension.

He declined, however, to say what he thought about his initial talks with the Eagles. It was reported that the team offered Dawkins a two-year extension worth $4.5 million, including a $2 million signing bonus.

Dawkins is in the final year of a deal that will pay him $3 million this season.

"We've talked about a contract extension, but as far as numbers, I'm not going to get into that," Dawkins said. "We want to keep the marriage going and we want to come to a common ground and get it done. It was definitely something that I wanted and they wanted also."

Dawkins said he did not think the contract talks would be a distraction because he has been through the process before.

"I know what to expect," he said. "I let Jim handle it."

Dawkins, who will turn 33 in October, declined to say how long he would like the extension to be. He did say that this would not necessarily be his final contract.

"Whatever this extension is, it by no means is going to be the end of my career," Dawkins said. "I'm not going to put a number on how many years I'm going to play."

Dawkins' fellow safety Michael Lewis can be a free agent after this season, but Lewis said he has not had any contract talks with the team since this time last year.

"In a way, you can say it's a little disappointing because of the things I feel I've done for this organization, but at the same time you've got to understand it's a business and things like this happen," Lewis said. "There are no ill feelings."

QuoteExclusive: 10 Questions for the Agent
  July 20, 2006

Recently, I was able to sit down with Rodney Williams to discuss some of the many questions that have been floating around about Michael's contract negotiation. Rodney is the President of Next Level Sports and Entertainment. Lately, much of the media spotlight Next Level is receiving has focused on Michael Lewis and his future with the Philadelphia Eagles. Eagles fans have made it known that they want Lewis to remain an Eagle, but Management has yet to lock Lewis into a long term deal which has prompted the following questions:

There were reports earlier that you considered holding Michael out of camp. How true were those reports?

We always planned to attend the mandatory camps, but we did discuss the pros and cons of skipping the "voluntary" camps. At that point Michael said that he didn't want to miss any time from camp, mandatory or voluntary.

Are you and the Eagles currently working towards negotiating an extension for Michael?

No.

Have you spoken recently regarding this matter, or when was the last time that you did discuss extending Michael's contract?

The last time that we talked about a contract was probably about a year ago. We both agreed to disagree about Michael's value at that time and agreed to continue talking at a more appropriate time.

There have been reports that you wanted Michael to be the highest paid safety. How true are those rumors?

Those reports are ridiculous because first of all, I haven't spoken with the Eagles regarding a contract in about a year. During the time that we were discussing contract numbers, I never asked for him to be the highest paid safety. What I wanted at that time is exactly what I want now, and that is a contract that gives Michael his fair market value.

Do you feel as though Michael's play dropped off last year?

I agree with Michael's assessment that he didn't play as well as he wanted to play last year. Coming off of a Pro-Bowl season, the expectations are extremely high from management, the fans, and the player himself. The team had several key injuries early that affected the entire team. It's quite funny that people's personal likes or dislikes can lead to subjective opinions. If you look at the statistics which are the only measuring stick that we have here, then Michael had a better year in 2005. He had more tackles, sacks, and interceptions than he did in his Pro-Bowl season. Unfortunately, the team did not have as good of a year, so any mistakes are magnified as people look for someone to blame for a poor season. Football is the ultimate team sport where all eleven players on the field need each other. The Eagles have gone out and addressed what they believed to be areas of concern with the defense, so this should be a better year for everybody.

Why do you feel Michael will have a better 2006 season?

As I stated earlier, the Eagles have made roster moves that are designed to improve the defense. Michael is a year removed from the ankle and toe surgery that he had before the 2005 season. He played last year with a lot of pain, but now he is completely healthy and primed for a big year.

Why is it important for a player to have a long term contract?

The player knows that he is wanted by the team. It also provides security in the event of an injury. During the 2001 season, the Eagles had a strong safety who was in the final year of his contract when he was injured during the playoffs. The team didn't owe him anything and his value was diminished on the free agent market. That injury led to the Eagles drafting Michael in the 2002 draft.

Do you think the lack of a long term contract will be a distraction during the season?

No, I don't think that it will be a distraction. Michael wants to finish his career as an Eagle, but he also understands that this is a business that may not allow that to happen. He is dedicated to giving 110 percent with or without a new contract. That is why he was so adamant about attending all of the mini camps and participating fully in the off-season program, when others in his situation may not have done that. He will not be a distraction to the Eagles and the contract situation will not be a distraction to him.

Pretend that I am Eagles management and tell me why I should resign Michael Lewis to a long-term contract.

Michael is a great football player and an even better person. He is a strong character guy and family man that is rare today. You are talking about the only guy on the team who has started the last 52 consecutive regular season games for the Eagles. He is a player who in his three full seasons as a starter has always finished in the top three in tackles each year. He is a 26 year old Pro-bowl player whose best years of football are ahead of him. He is about as close to a sure thing as you will get.

Now, for the big question, in 2007 what team will Michael Lewis be playing for?

I truly hope that it is the Eagles. They have complete control over the answer to that question. The Eagles have exclusive negotiating rights right now while he is under contract. It would really be nice to see the Eagles step up to the plate and take care of a player that has done everything the right way and represented the organization with class.

Looks like the agent is trying to get people stirred up about Lewis

Meh, nothing too inflammatory there.  It sounds more like he's trying to paint a "good boy" picture of Lewis, to get them to the table.  Compare to Rosenhaus last year.
