Imus has always been a bitter old man, even before he was that old.  I wouldn't defend him personally at all.  I would and do, however, defend the right to free speech.  There are more inflammatory things said on radio shows every day than "nappy headed hos", but public opinion and a media circus drove that shtein to prominence.

It's just stupid because no one should give a shtein what Don Imus says anyway.


As for "white guy in the south" - Raleigh/Durham is a very weird area.  It's not the "south" as you know it, but it's also not nearly as class/race segregated as the north.  Ie: You actually see black guys on golf courses here.  Racism really isn't a way of life down here at all as it is in the stereotypical south, and I see epithets and slurs as counterproductive to the ultimate goal of a society where race means much less than it does now.

There's every bit as much racism in the north as there is in the south.   I've lived in both regions and I can attest to that.

Communities here in the south are actually a bit more progressive when it comes to race relations.  There's segregation to be sure but no more than you'd see in Moorestown, Villanova or even Sea Isle City, for that matter.
