The cops will be at Sarge's door on Monday morning to arrest him for child abuse.

Instead of the Joan Crawford Wire Hangar treatment, Sassy's kids get the Phillies?

Brutal.

So, who plays 3rd next year?  Maybe they'll be able to snag Wilson Betemit from the Braves Dodgers!

Quote2007 Free Agent Market: Third Basemen

I don't have any sweet exclusive rumors for you at the moment, so a look at next year's free agent third basemen will have to suffice.  We'll just check out players that I consider possible regulars.  Also, you can view all the entries for the 2007 MLB free agents.

2006 League Averages for Third Basemen
AL:  .263/.335/.431
NL:  .283/.353/.476

Aaron Boone - The 33 year-old is having an uninspiring season at .263/.319/.371.  The Indians kept him for $3.75MM this season with an option for '07 at the same salary.  With Andy Marte and Kevin Kouzmanoff waiting in the wings, free agency is a foregone conclusion.  Boone is the third-worst 3B in the game this year, so maybe I should've left him off the list like I did with David Bell.  Hopefully the Pirates won't sign Boone.

Pedro Feliz - Feliz is doing his thing once again, hitting for decent power with awful on-base skills.  Feliz can play left field, so don't be surprised if the Cubs add him this offseason to guarantee they finish last in OBP.  He's 31 years old.

Aubrey Huff - Huff is finally heating up in June after a lousy start that included a layoff for a knee sprain.  The Dodgers and Tigers are said to be interested; Huff makes $6.75 and will almost certainly be dealt.  He can play any of the corner positions, though none of them well.  He's worth around $11MM from 2007-09 according to Baseball Prospectus, so he'll almost certainly sign a bad contract this winter.  Huff is the youngster of the group at 29.

Joe Randa - Randa is the definition of average.  Despite that, the 36 year-old earned about $20MM throughout his career.  He missed most of May with a bone contusion in his foot, and is definitely being showcased for a trade.  The Padres could pick him up for pennies on the dollar.  He'll probably get his typical one-year, $4MM contract this offseason in return for his below average but tolerable production.

Nomar Garciaparra - Nomar is second in baseball with a .358 average.  This must be the Ex-Cub factor coming into play.  He might be able to cash all of his playing time incentives this year and earn $8MM.  Garciaparra can play the corners or maybe left field at this point, and his one-year contract may really help him cash in, Millwood style.  Baseball Prospectus thinks he'll be out of baseball by 2010, so this will be a very dangerous signing.  Nomar is 32 currently.

Shea Hillenbrand - He hasn't played third base full-time since 2002.  Still, this is a weak crop.  He promised us 30 HR and 100 RBI in the preseason and is pacing for about 27 and 87, both of which would be career highs.  Another well-timed career year; Hillenbrand could be trouble at $7-8MM a year.  He's already 30 years old.

This is a worrisome group.  Teams should really look within to fill the third base job; several of these signings (Nomar, Hillenbrand) may be disastrous.  Randa is the low-risk, low-reward pick; Huff could be a decent option if he comes at a bargain after an off-year.

Nothing great in there, but some players who could be definate capable players for a few years into Costanzo is ready. I'm more concered with getting a) Zito/better pitching and b) a catcher not named Mike Lieberthal than whose gonna play third.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Geowhizzer

Dependa on what ramoN wants.  With a .350+ average this season, his agent will be trying to say that Garciaparra is "back," and be asking for the big $$$.

Besides, when we pry A-Rod from the Yankees, we'll be set.  8) ;D :=)

PoopyfaceMcGee

A-Rod has forgotten how to play in the field, though.

Feva

He'll fit right in then.

I just figured I'd say it before someone else did.

Fielding is the least of the Phillies problems.

I'm not saying it's not a problem, but it's of miniscule importance compared to other issues.

Rome

The Phillies are currently 10th in errors and 11th in fielding percentage in the NL.

It's a problem and a serious one at that.

Of course, David Bell is gone now, so that should improve.

Clutch hitting (and hitting in general) and pitching consistency have been much bigger problems.
