Yep.  Gordon gave up a 2-run dinger in the top of the ninth but he ended up sewing it up in the end.

Isn't Hillenbrand's defense atrocious?

yeah hes a dh...which is why it makes prefect sense for the phils to get him

please charlie dont pitch this man again before the deadline...not taking anything away from him this year cause hes been great so far but hes at amy given time one game away from being to old (if hes not already) and because of that they need to get rid of him and his two more years right now even if its for an average AA guy...trust me you do not want tom gordon as your closer at age 39 and 40

Lidle helped out his trade value tonight.

Lieber needs to do the same.

IGY, I wouldn't mind seeing Flash dealt. But I have to wonder what exactly the market would be for him when we see what the Braves had to give up for Wickman. They gave up a A level catching prospect.

ice grillin you

gordon value>>wickman value

in fact gordons value will never come close to what it right now for the rest of his career

getting a big return is not the reason to deal him right now...theres two reasons to do it...

1. imo hes gonna fall off hard the rest of this season much less into next year AND the year after...i think his first half this year was a big time oasis

2. he makes a ton of money for a almost 40 year old closer

as far as he goes cut your lossses right now if you can

I don't disagree. I wouldn't mind dealing him.

But I don't want to get some low level guy. Clearing money is not an issue because just losing Bell, Lieberthal and Wolf's contracts frees up $21M. And I assume that Lieber will be dealt too thus clearing $7.5M more.

I'd try to move him in a package deal. Or let's hope that someone's closers elbow blows up in the next couple of days. Maybe Papelbon is due for some Tommy John.

ice grillin you

you have to think tho

move him now for a mid level guy vs not being able to move him at all for the next two years while hes either taking up the closer spot and sucking or a set up role and sucking all the while making 8 million a year

Unless Gillick pulls several rabbits out of his hat in the next several days, Gordon is useless on this team.

He'd be great for a pennant contender (Detroit has Doug Jones as the closer - they ain't winning nothing with that hack saving games) but for this team, he's a luxury they don't need.

Get rid of Abreu or Burrell (as if) get a major-league caliber catcher, get a true leadoff hitter and revamp the starting pitching staff.

It sounds like an impossible task, and it probably is, but the sooner Gillick starts, the better.

PS: Fire the yokel too.  They need a proven winner leading the team and Manuel isn't it.

Wingspan

gillick only signed a 2 year deal. so none of this will happen.

gillick will retire at the end of next season. and ruben amaro jr will be the next phillies gm.

Romey, they have Todd Jones. Although I can see how you erred. Both were closers in Detroit and both were in Philadelphia and sucked here.

Wing,

Gillick signed a 3yr deal. So the inevitable Amaro-to-GM thing will not happen until 2009. Only way it happens earlier is if Gillick says "farg these owners, retirement is better for me". And that could happen too.

Rome

They can't win with Todd Jones either.

Gillick says Manuel's job is safe

General manager supports skipper despite club's struggles

By Ken Mandel / MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- Manager Charlie Manuel won't be dismissed this season, general manager Pat Gillick said on a Philadelphia radio station on Friday.

In an appearance on the Jody McDonald show on WPEN 950-AM on Friday, the Phils' GM gave Manuel the strongest public endorsement yet this season. Asked if he saw any scenario for a change, Gillick said, "No, not at all."

"As we're sitting here today, Charlie's our manager," Gillick said. "With the things that have happened over the course of the season, even though he's the most public figure, the responsibility for the way the team has played doesn't only fall on the manager, the coaches and the playing personnel, it falls on the management of the club."

Gillick had offered a lukewarm endorsement on June 18 when asked about Manuel's status. At that time, Gillick said he thought the skipper was doing a good job. The GM has repeatedly said he likes the way Manuel motivates players.

Gillick made those comments on the radio in the afternoon and wasn't available to local media later in the day. Attempts to reach him were unsuccessful. A club official said Gillick was in meetings with members of the Clearwater, Fla., staff.

Gillick offered another "not at all," when asked if the Phils had any interest in Shea Hillenbrand, who was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Wednesday and dealt to the Giants late Friday night. Gillick said the team has both a short-term and long-term plan to contend, meaning he believes the club isn't in need of serious rebuilding.

"I'm going to be listening the next 10 days or so," Gillick said. "Probably a lot of phone time here. If you're talking all the time, you're not listening. I like to listen to what other clubs have to say. I may inititate another call, but it's a situation where you have an idea who you match up with and who has players that may make you better, and you go from there."

Gillick didn't need a reminder that the Phils are 5 1/2 games behind the Reds in the National League Wild Card standings, and trailed eight teams in the race. Still, he wouldn't commit to whether the club is a buyer or a seller leading up to the July 31 trade deadline.

This weekend's series against the Braves will likely go a long way toward determining that.

"I think you have to have a short- and a long-range plan, and we have a plan for both those in place," Gillick said. "We're going to try and do both. I think you can. There are players who can help you now and in the future, if you make a deal for a player that can help you now but could be around for a while."  * WTF is he talking about? *   :sly

The GM said he thought this season was "disappointing" overall, but sees the potential for improvement. He also knows that the Phillies likely will need help from other teams.

"A lot depends on how you play and how others play," Gillick said. "At the moment, there's a lot of teams in front of us in the Wild Card. You have to monitor on a daily basis, but you get an idea of where you are not from the standings, but how you're team is playing. And we have been pretty inconsistent. If we play consistently the next 11 or 12 games, that may be a sign that we are playing together."

Wonderful.  A GM who, at least on the surface, doesn't appear to have a clue.

I hope this is nothing but a smokescreen.

i'm not sure it is a smokescreen.

i didnt know this until recently, but you know he never once talked to Vicente Padilla or his agent (you know, the 10-5 guy with a 4.15 ERA in the AL, maintaining a 1.32 WHIP)...he asked other phils employees about what he was like.

instead...he gave padilla away...and signed Ryan Franklin.

Vicente would be the ace of the Phillies staff, the next time Myers beats his woman.
