It was a murder trial, of course. I was not picked, needless to say. 

I take this shtein seriously though.  It's one of the things that keeps us from being straight up barbarians.  Sad to see so many people, grown people, behaving like high schoolers in detention.

Vois Dire was interesting insofar as one of the judge's questions was basically, are you a bigot, to which of course no one stood but for which of course several people in three hundred or so should have stood.  No way there aren't people among those three hundred who would never convict a young black man of murder.  The guy who's dad was killed by a black guy, and can't let it go enough to stand in judgement of a black man, yeah, he doesn't get a chance to say that honestly and privately to the judge, and he knows better than to stand up and be seen as the card carrying KKK guy. 

In order to give room for such people to answer the judge honestly, he could have paired that question with another, much more commonly answered question like, "has anyone here been the victim of a crime?." and then dealt in private at the bench with that joror's answer. 

It would mean you get a better jury.

Apple patent could remotely disable protesters' phone cameras

U.S. Patent No. 8,254,902, otherwise known as "Apparatus and methods for enforcement of policies upon a wireless device," was granted in late-August, and would allow phone policies to be set to "chang[e] one or more functional or operational aspects of a wireless device [...] upon the occurrence of a certain event."

What that means in real-terms is "preventing wireless devices from communicating with other wireless devices (such as in academic settings)," and for, "forcing certain electronic devices to enter "sleep mode" when entering a sensitive area."

But the patented technology may also be used to restrict protesters' right to free expression in oppressive regimes around the world -- if you haven't checked recently, there's plenty of them -- by preventing camera images and video being taken at political rallies and events.
