On a completely unrelated note.....

Since I'm moving to San Diego somewhere around Sept 1, I told squaw she needed to start looking for jobs.  Roughly 3 weeks in and she already got an offer and starts on Monday.  Luckily, she has an aunt and uncle who live down there so she will be staying with them for the next 4 months and will be straight banking her paychecks.  This is pretty awesome because she's been out of work for almost 2 years since we moved to our little desert town of 13k people and no jobs.

LOL....the disk is currently stuck in my computer that won't power up.  I'm taking in this weekend to have it looked at so hopefully I'll have it in the mail for you on Sat or Mon.

i know the basic rules of math.

i just didn't think that 2(9+3) was the same as 2 x (9+3). i mean i know they are the same number but i thought the parenthesis make it so you do that first.

so maybe i don't know the basic rules of math. too much of my brain is spent thinking about all my money.

The only way you can come up with an answer of 2 is if the problem reads as 48/(2(9+3)), in which case,  you would solve 9+3=12. Then 2x12=24.  Now that you've solved all of the problems within parenthesis, you can apply the left to right rule which is 48/24=2.

Didn't you just get your Masters?

I came up with 2 by reading the problem as 48รท2/(9+3)

I must have missed that class.

BTW, there is also a hierarchy involved, called the order of operations. Parens first, then multiplication, then division. Following this, 2 is correct.

multiplication and division hold the same priority in the order of operations.

Spelling nazi, Sus?  You're better than that.

PEDMAS in the US, BEDMAS (Bracket, Exponents, Divide, Multiply, Add, Subtract) is the Eurotrash teaching.  I got them both in HS.  One of my HS teachers was a dook from Pakistan.  He said both methods were stupid (for this exact reason as people are getting 2 different answers) so if you just solve parenthesis first and then work L to R, you'll be good to go.  I'll trust my Pakistani math teacher over any US edumacated number jockey every day of the week.

When it comes to the whole Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, once you get past the parenthesis and exponents, you perform the rest of the operations in the order they appear in the problem. Or in other words, division and multiplication are on "equal ground", as are addition and subtraction. So even though "my" comes before "dear", you still perform the division first if it came first in said problem.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Yeah....we're all nerds. I don't even like math thanks to Algebra II.

Anyone wanna play Math 24?! :crazy
