You're assuming I've never helped raise children.  I agree that no kid under 2 should be smacked or starved.....they don't know anything yet.  When they're 3 and they're not listening to you, they're smacking and pushing their younger brother and they're being a pain in the ass with no end in sight, a calm "sweetie, Mommy's not happy with this!" isn't going to get the point across.  I'm not in any way condoning child abuse....no way.  I also don't agree with smacking a kid a dozen times in the aisle of a supermarket.......don't embarrass yourself like that.  As a last resort, a smack (not full strength or anything) on the ass, leg or arm is not going to scar a kid for life, and the next time they act up, just raise a hand without making any other motions and they'll quiet down.

A lot of my professors/teachers since high school have been telling me to minor in Spec Ed because it would mean an automatic job when I'm done college. I don't think I could handle a class full of special needs kids, but Delaware is moving towards the streamline or mainstream or whatever it's called philosophy. Part of me sees why this is a good idea for the special needs kids, but another part of me wonders how a teacher (at least one without the special ed degree) can handle those kids and get through the lesson plan for the rest of the kids.

From what I hear (and I hear enough), working with the kids is the good part. Dealing with the parents, the lazy people in the I.U. system, and all the paperwork is where the frustration lies.

My wife's degree was in Early Childhood, and she worried about her career. She got an assistant job at the I.U., then moved up to teacher, and then completed her Masters in SpEd on the I.U.'s dime. It's a good place to be, but it's definitely a lot of work.

Nope. I have a 3 year old, who does push her little brother and get on my last nerve while I'm trying to work and cook dinner and eerything else.

There are far better methods of getting a child to listen than to use any physical means.  Popping, tapping, swatting, smacking, spanking...all lazy parenting. Find another way.

And who said it has to be something like, "Sweetie, Mommy's not happy with you"? That is nothing even close to something I'd say.  ::)

All it takes is a little research and some work to avoid using a fear tactic to shut your kid up when you want your kid to shut up.

try making them eat spiders.  that'll make them shape up.

Zanshin

Usually, that makes them like the taste of spiders.

I found fear to be an excellent motivator when watching my sister's kids. Telling them that their parents are never coming back for them because they're bad kids, or that you're going to throw them off the Burlington/Bristol Bridge works really well.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

One of the classes I took last semester concentrated on the relationship you have with your parents, and yes it definitely seems like the parents of special needs children present huge problems sometimes. I'm Elem. Ed now but I think I'll eventually switch to History Ed....I like kids, but it'll hurt to much to deal with little kids who you can tell are getting neglected/abused or their parents just don't give a damn about their going to school, just as long as they're there.

In other news, apparently Obama called Kayne West a jackass.

I have a feeling Unky Mussa is gonna be changing the pureed pea zesty diapers all day Friday

rjs246

Only the most intelligent of people would agree to babysitting with the expectation that no diapers will be changed.
