^^^^hah!

Pretty sure we used to have a job thread, but our schools population has been growing after like a decade of decline, so next year were bringing back AP Government&Politics and I snagged it. First AP class I'll be teaching (well, that I'm actually qualified for. When I got out of day to day subbing and started doing long term leave replacement jobs, I did a year as an AP Environmental Science. I knew enough about the subject but never trained to teach it :-D). Itll also give me a break in my schedule from freshmen, as I've had all freshmen minus one class ever since I made the jump from special ed to social studies.

Woo. Of course from what I hear our schools AP Gov textbooks aren't aligned with the new course/test so...great.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

You'll never escape the grunt work in an organization so large and rule-bound, and that's fine.  Older (and therefore possibly, though not necessarily, more mature) kids, and AP ones, should be more fun, congrats.

Yeah I'm extremely excited to talk about Government/Politics with 12th graders. My 9th graders are Civics/Econ classes but 14 year olds and 17/18 year olds are one a whole different level of understanding and being able to talk about these things.

I don't mind having the 9th graders too much just because my course, especially the civics portion, is well built and easy enough to run through. US History has always been the goal for me and I did a year of Honors level World History, but also I really don't like having the lower level 10th and 11th graders. Lower level 9th graders are easy to deal with, they're pains in the ass but not complete iceholes the way a 17 year old can be.

My subject will change in two years.  Because of Florida's stupid Civics test, my district decided to shift U.S. History to 6th grade, supposedly to provide "background" for the Civics in 7th.  8th grade will be changing to Florida history.  The change in 6th begins this year, but I get a two-year grace to get this year's sixth-graders through.

So now World History will go the way of Geography... out of middle school altogether.

World History and Geography get the shaft here too. They're combined into one class in 10th grade (or 9th, depending on the district, but mroe do it 10th). And there's absolutely no organized support for it on the state level. It's kind of the wild west right now, which on one hand was great the year I did honors level World because I was able to basically focus on whatever points in time I wanted. I stuck with a more western/euro-centric course since I'm frankly just more knowledgeable in it than I am the other stuff. But the downside to this is you literally just have no real state curriculum to work off of, districts don't do shtein for it either, etc. Every World teacher I know around here hates the Geography curriculum that the district went out and spent money on, but the district refuses to pay teachers to re-write it so, no one does it lol. They tried to order us to only do world history from 1200 on but a lot of the teachers just ignore that and do ancient and antiquity anyway.

Middle school around here sounds like they did it similar to the way you are doing it now before the switch. 6th grade is a mix of geography and economics, 7th grade is a mix of Civics and economics, and 8th grade is pure US history. No world history.

Can you not follow US History to the 6th graders? Or do you just not want 6th graders?

I have seniority, so I probably could if I pressed the issue, though it is fully at the pleasure of the principal.  The problem would be that our six grade teachers would more than likely have trouble with classroom management with the older students.  Personally, I think the older kids are more fun.

I also love the 8th grade traditions at my school, and would miss being an active part of them.  As much as I wish they would keep the subjects as-is, I'd take the grade over the subject.

First movie my daughter saw in the theaters ^^^^. We love splash mountain but it's outdated and needs to be rethemed. The "all lives matter" folks are losing their shtein which makes it that much better.

Concrete pour scheduled for 2 hours from now on the most ambitious job of my pathetic career to date.  Monolithic slab and footer (permitted, passed inspection Wednesday), of only 120 sq. ft, but with a tricky form up in the center for an existing stairwell to the cellar, etc.   House is circa 1875...

Weather is clear all day.  Big day for Dio.
