Yeah I'm not trolling at all.  UA fully within it's rights to bump passengers even after boarding. That's how flying works..  Not saying they did the deed well, or that security handled the situation well, because clearly they both failed.  There were ample opportunities to reduce tension and achieve the desired result that were not taken.  For all that, UA and the airport will pay dearly.  Not least because the brainless social media mob is really enjoying their indignant circle jerk.

But let's stop pretending this guy is a blameless victim, some kind of civil rights martyr.  When he refused to leave the plane, he became part of the problem and resisting security when they arrived was further unnecessary escalation.

Total agreement.

he will be a martyr if this leads to the airlines changing their anti consumer practices....of course this would be asking a corporation to become 1% human....so i wont be staying up at night waiting for anything to change

What will more likely happen is to lessen the chance of physical altercation, airlines will be given the ability to leverage the TSA to add federal charges - with the threat of jail time and/or being put on the no-fly list for passengers who refuse to budge.

Of course they're in their right to IDB people after boarding - IF they follow the procedures and compensation set by the DOT. They did not do this. They lowballed and continued to lowball. Once no one jumped on that $800-1000 then they need to get up to that DOT mandated $1350 max and provide them with additional means of travel.

You don't call the cops in to physically remove someone when you aren't even following the law.

And yes - the gate agent did make an announcement that four people needed to get off the plane and that they would not leave until that happened. Three people took offers. If you have a stubborn hanger on then you have the option to increase the offer - which they did not do.

In the bigger picture - farg these airlines. They've merged themselves into having virtually no competition (shout out to the greedy politicians who allowed these mergers and not calling it off for anti-trust issues). They cram small seats into planes and nickel and dime people to death.

I've been flying a bit lately, and I wondered if there is a business opportunity for a carrier to have planes that seat fewer passengers - with increased fares, of course - and offer more services. It seems that there is always a demand for first/business class seats, and even those are getting crappier each year. There has to be a way to make comfortable flying a financially viable thing.

UA is completely at fault here but any grown man who screams like that kinda needs a good punch every now and then.

Maybe they should just make it illegal to intentionally overbook flights so they don' have to use legal means to abuse customers.

That sounds like you want the airline industry to be regulated. Which two regulations do we repeal in order to pass this one?

brilliant!

i mean jesus how about just dont over sell the plane

concerts dont do it...cruises dont do it....trains dont do it...buses dont do it...sporting events dont do it....movie theaters dont do it....you buy a ticket you get provided that service

if a plane has a 172 seats...guess what?....farging sell 172 tickets...if cancellations are a problem then make a stricter cancellation policy but if you allow a patron to purchase your service you should be obligated to provide that service on time with exceptions being circumstances outside your control

this isnt farging rocket science

its just crazy to me that people actually are stikcing up for an intentionally awful practice that led to this guy getting his head kicked in

I agree- it should not be acceptable for them (and hotels) to overbook.

Susquehanna Birder

Trains, in fact, do overbook. As do hotels and resorts. And concerts. And cruises. It's a fairly common practice.

The big concern here is that it wasn't a pure overbooking problem. The passengers were bumped to make room for United employees who had to be in Louisville to cover another flight.

It was a complex mix of screw ups, and like I said, there is plenty of blame to go around.

I heard that hotels, cruises and trains overbooked as well, but concerts too ?

either way, I never remember hearing about somebody getting booted from any of those. ever. especially in this fashion.

I get it, rules are rules, but how about a little humanity.

obviously i mean overbooking where people are regularly getting kicked off trains....ive ridden literally thousands of trains in my life and never seen or head of a passenger being kicked off....ive stayed at thousands of hotels and never seen or heard of someone not getting a room

has it ever happened...im sure a couple times somewhere...but does it happen and does it have anything to do with what airlines do...no

this is what i mean by people just insanely going out of their way to justify this guys beating whether partially blaming him which is downright cruel to trying to imply a false equivalency btwn airlines and concerts....like anyone has ever heard of someone getting kicked out of their concert seat right before showtime...do you have relatives in anagement at the airlines or something...i just dont get it
