Sure but the potential cost for lifting and fixing a derailed train, plus cleanup on whatever cargo was spilled, is too high a price to pay to adding such a small amount of chlorine to the gene pool.

Samsung TVs start inserting ads into your movies

QuoteThought you could watch that video on your local hard drive without ads? Think again: A number of owners of Samsung's smart TVs are reporting this week that their TV sets started to interrupt their movie viewing with Pepsi ads, which seem to be dynamically inserted into third-party content.

"Every movie I play 20-30 minutes in it plays the pepsi ad, no audio but crisp clear ad. It has happened on 6 movies today," a user reported on Reddit, where a number of others were struggling with the same problem.

Reports for the unwelcome ad interruption first surfaced on a Subreddit dedicated to Plex, the media center app that is available on a variety of connected devices, including Samsung smart TVs. Plex users typically use the app to stream local content from their computer or a network-attached storage drive to their TV, which is why many were very surprised to see an online video ad being inserted into their videos. A Plex spokesperson assured me that the company has nothing to do with the ad in question.

Samsung is warning customers about discussing personal information in front of their smart television set.

QuoteThe warning came to light via a story in online news magazine the Daily Beast which published an excerpt of a section of Samsung's privacy policy for its net-connected Smart TV sets. These record what is said when a button on a remote control is pressed.

Smart TV owner Peter Kent: "It makes me think twice"
The policy explains that the TV set will be listening to people in the same room to try to spot when commands or queries are issued via the remote. It goes on to say: "If your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party."

Corynne McSherry, an intellectual property lawyer for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) which campaigns on digital rights issues, told the Daily Beast that the third party was probably the company providing speech-to-text conversion for Samsung.

She added: "If I were the customer, I might like to know who that third party was, and I'd definitely like to know whether my words were being transmitted in a secure form."

The man. The myth. The legend.

This is not good on either front. Hopefully someone will be able to stop it before the other companies think it is ok.

Reminds me of the chick in our office...we got one of those new touch screen printers a couple years ago. We had her convinced it was voice activated too so she was standing there for a solid 15min trying to make it print, scan and fax with voice prompts. Started off as a normal inside voice and ended with her screaming "print! Print four pages!"

General_Failure

Voice activated technology never works. You should see about getting her a dry erase monitor.
