I wouldn't seriously look at 4k yet. None of the networks will make the switch for years. Porn is only just getting to it, and they're always way out ahead of of everyone for this stuff.

If I can recall correctly, Doubleday assumed command of his corps (I Corps) when his superior, John Reynolds, was killed early in the first day of the battle.  It might have effectively been "the forces" at Gettysburg (other than Buford's cavalry), but his control was just the corps.  Other troops simply hadn't arrived yet.  When the II Corps arrived, Winfield Scott Hancock took command of the battlefield until George Meade, who had only recently been named the head of the Army of the Potomac, arrived at the end of the first day.

From what I've seen, there was a good bit of the afternoon when Doubleday was in charge of the battlefield before Gen Howard arrived, and there is a whole storyline about a history of bad blood between Howard (and to an extend Meade) and that Howard filed a false report about Doubleday's lines caving in (when in reality Doubleday was a very effective commander), leading Meade to replace him with Howard.  As for Hancock - Norristown represent!
