This might be really stupid, but I never understand how people can drown in their own car.  Roll the faring windows down and swim out.

It's possible that they wouldn't work if they were electric, and they're harder break in the water than people think. They include little hammering devices in a lot of car kits just for that purpose.

I get it if they're power windows and the electric shorts out.  They drove down a boat ramp, so it's not like their car fell off the side of a mountain and totally submerged into the water on impact.  And it was a minivan, which means the tire iron should have been easily accessible.  Not like a car where it would be in the trunk, separated from the front seat.

You're surfing to look cool?  What?  If I had to swim with sharks--I don't go in the ocean--you can bet your ass I'd wear that thing.  NOT FOOD, it says...sounds good to me.

The best shark repellent is still shark blood. Just bathe in that before going out and you'll always be fine. You may get beat to shtein by dolphins, but sharks won't be a problem.
