So I just read that a whale was euthanized in Australia....by explosives.

As it turns out, that is the standard method of euthanasia if the whale is too big to shoot (bigger than ~25 feet).  Even in the States.

I can understand that in Australia, where no one can own guns.  But I gotta believe that, wherever a whale washes up in the U.S., there's a gun nut with a massive piece he never gets to use on anything and who would be more than happy to donate his time and bullet for the chance to kill something.

You'd need an elephant gun or a Barrett 50cal to penetrate i'd think.  Down at the DE beaches, there's been 3 whales to wash up in the past 5 years.  They've all been dead, so they just cut them in half, and drag them down the beach until they find an area where they can bury it in a 10 foot hole.  fargers stink all summer long.  They floated the idea of blowing them up, but there was concern of guts washing up on the beaches for days, and the cleanup that would be required.

speaking of using bird parts, Resident Goose season started on 9/1 in PA.  It's been way too hot out for me to go, but i'm going to keep all the goose necks i get this year for crabbing next season.  From what i've heard they work great.
