The mistake I made was in buying too soon.  We were sick of renting, and being treated like renters.  Prices were down and we wanted to start a family.  So we bought a house.  It's not going to fall down or anything, but it needs work.  Right now, I'm replacing 2nd story windows and with hour I work, I uncover more shtein that needs to be replaced or fixed.  I know how to do this stuff now, and I have help, but it's a lot of hassle and no small amount of money.

Meanwhile the value of the house is tanking and my family is growing.

In short, I was stupid stupid stupid.

Being treated like a renter sucks major moose rectum.  If you're in a good apt complex/building or going through a rental/property management company, that's one thing because you tend to at least get slightly better service, but if you're renting from another person, chances are you're never going to be fully satisfied.  I'm renting right now and my landlady is a good landlady and she still pisses me off because sometimes I have to check with her on a daily basis if something needs to be fixed.

I owned when I was in KC and owned in NC and and it was so much easier and less stressful when something around the house needed to get done because I could just do it myself.  When I moved back to KC, I moved into a pretty nice apartment complex and they were fantastic about fixing things, but they were the exception to the rule.

my family never owned our home when I was growing up.  to buy a home was such a fantasy it wasn't even entertained.

now I'm a homeowner and it's great not to have the sword of damocles hanging over my head

but holy farg the cost, the stress, the lack of mobility

looking back, I would not have bought so soon, but I didn't have the benefit of hindsight and so here I am.  stuckin a 110 year old house that needs more money and time than I have, with a family that is only the next kid away from being too big for this house, and no means to do anything about it

I should be grateful to have a roof, but since it leaks and I'm up to my neck in replacing second story windows right now, i'm not feeling too farging grateful

Yeah, it pretty much sucks to be you.  But look at the bright side....you can do all the painting you want and don't have to worry about returning the walls to their original color when you leave.  So that's a plus.

Obviously, I didn't care for it quite as much then as I do now.
