An experiment in Thailand involving 16,000 men and women has demonstrated for the first time a small but measurable protective effect of an AIDS vaccine.

The vaccine, a complicated mixture of six "prime" and "booster" shots, reduced a person's risk of becoming infected by about one-third compared with people getting placebo injections.

So 16,000 healthy, unaffected people voluenteered to be part of a trial where they were willingly given HIV to test an experimental drug?  Am I reading this right?

That's not how it works. They aren't given AIDS, they're told to go about their lives and the rate at which they contract the disease is measured against the rate at which the control group or general population contracts the disease.

It's an imperfect study, of course, but I guarantee they weren't administering AIDS suppositories as part of it.
