favre was planning on signing with the vikings since march.  why else would he retire and then ask the jets to formally release him?  normally when a player retires, the team he retires from retains the rights to him until the end of the actual contract.  but this allowed favre the freedom to sign with minny and kept the jets from having to hand draft picks over to green bay. 

the vikes and favre probably knew in may that he was going to play this year, they just did a very good job of keeping it under wraps until this week when they signed the paperwork. 

he also had the surgery done which was only needed to play football...it wasnt required to live a normal retired life

I actually played some poker recently and enjoyed it.  Lost 20 bucks, but had a good time.  I think I'll do it again.

I don't really know how they can trash the Vikings' decision to bring in Favre on football grounds. Yeah sure he's not an elite QB anymore, and it's questionable whether he's even still "good", but all the Vikings had was Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels. Favre is without question an upgrade over that trash.
