QuotePackers: Favre wants more time to decide

INDIANAPOLIS - One week from what seems a logical deadline for a decision on his future, Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre remains undecided about retirement - and he wants even more time to think about it.

Due a $3 million roster bonus March 8 - a payment the Packers wouldn't want to make if Favre isn't going to play in 2006 - Favre said in an interview that aired on ESPN Tuesday he wants to see what the team does to improve its personnel before making a decision.

"In some ways, I'm kind of waiting to see what we do free agent-wise and in the draft and those things," Favre said in Homestead, Fla., where he was taking NASCAR driving lessons. "And they're probably kind of waiting on me, too. So it's a little bit of a waiting game. Right now, I'm just trying to get away from it as much as I can and clear my mind, as hard as that may be."

The free-agency period is scheduled to begin Friday, although the uncertainty in negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the players association could delay it. However, the league said it would not extend Friday's deadline after talks stalled with the NFLPA Tuesday.

The draft, in which the Packers hold the No. 5 overall pick, is April 29 and 30.

Favre, 36, threw a career-high and NFL-worst 29 interceptions last season, when the Packers finished 4-12, their first losing season since 1991. He left Green Bay following the Packers' season-ending victory over Seattle on New Year's Day and has spoken with general manager Ted Thompson and new coach Mike McCarthy several times since, although both have said they haven't given Favre a deadline for a decision.

Thompson could not be reached for comment Tuesday, while McCarthy was traveling from the NFL scouting combine and was unavailable.

On Thursday, Favre's agent, Bus Cook, said at the NFL scouting combine his client might consider pushing back the due date for the roster bonus to give himself more time to think about whether he wants to return for a 16th NFL season.

However, a NFL source said the Packers might not be willing to move the date, wanting instead for Favre to make up his mind - which Favre appears no closer to doing.

"I wish I would wake up and know," Favre said. "I was telling my mom several days ago when she was asking me the same question - 'You know, when are you going to make up your mind?' - I wish I would wake up and say, 'What have you been waiting on? It's a clear-cut decision.'

"I mean, there's more things involved. I love to play the game but I want to compete at a high level. I'd like to know our team is going to compete at a high level. Just kind of ... you know, gut instinct hasn't told me anything yet."
"Oh, yeah. They'll still boo. They have to. They're born to boo. Just now, they'll only boo with two Os instead of like four." - Larry Andersen

im sick of this overhyped, old piece of shtein. enough.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

That's a pretty selfish approach from Farve, as who the Packers land in FA isn't totally under their control. T

They could go out & target a bunch of top tier guys, have them fall through & then Favre would retire leaving a big gaping wound at QB after all the best QB's are gone.

I hope they feel compelled to pay him the bonus, then he fargs them by retiring.

Jarrett Bell, of USA Today, reports Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre could possibly be cut Friday, March 3

It better be a joke, because if it's not...I think I just might have to give up football. Where is the justice?

Bout time the Packers thought about growing a set of balls.  If "God" can't decide... make the decision for him.
