It would probably be a well-received idea to have a laptop that you could actually sit on your lap for an extended period of time without burning yourself or overheating the computer.  You'd have to think that the major manufacturers have worked on this, though.  Plus, I'm not an engineer.

There's apparently plenty of "surface area" on the sides to exhaust the air there.

Really...have you actually looked at the air intake on a laptop? Mine has two fans about the size of a half dollar each. Are you saying that some engineer couldn't figure out a way to draw air in from another part of the case, even if it meant increasing the velocity of the air at the expense of surface area?

FYI:  Used the laptop for 2 1/2 hours in the truest sense of the word, and it didn't overheat at all.

So, I guess with the T4x series, IBM/Lenovo has figured out how to conduct heat out the sides.
