Sources around the league say the Flyers have been in talks with both Phoenix and Minnesota. The Flyers are said to be interested in defensemen Derek Morris and Dennis Gauthier of the Coyotes and former Flyer forward Wes Walz of the Wild.

Morris has the most potential impact of those three. The 28-year-old was part of the multi-player trade in 2002 which sent him from Calgary to Colorado for Chris Drury and Stephane Yelle.

Closer to home, sources say the Flyers are still interested in bringing back Mark Recchi from Pittsburgh for a third term.

QuoteFlyers waive Turner Stevenson
By Tim Panaccio
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

One of the nicest, most genuine players to have ever worn the orange 'n black sweater was placed on waivers today as the Flyers attempt to clear more cap space heading into tomorrow's 3 p.m. trade deadline.

Right wing Turner Stevenson, who will turn 34 in May, was waived in a salary cap move. It gives the team about $262,000 in cap space to add to the approximate $2.2 million going into today.

Assistant general manager Paul Holmgren gave Stevenson the news this morning.

"He told me it was strictly a salary cap move, they want to clear some space to do something," Stevenson said from his South Jersey home. "If they do it now, I should clear. If they wait to do it after the trade deadline, then someone can pick me up for half salary next season."

He has one year left on his deal at $1.254 million - same salary as this season.

Stevenson was signed as a free agent two summers ago as a penalty killer and checking-line specialist but never fully got a chance to be effective here because of a previous hip injury that bothered him from season's start.

Stevenson missed 33 total games (at various times) this season with problems in his right hip and right labrum. He's had prior surgeries to his knee and hip area in New Jersey some years ago.

His cap number was $6,398 daily for an annual salary of $1.254 million. If he clears waivers, the Flyers save $262,316.

"Hopefully, I clear waivers and get a chance to heal," Stevenson said. "They don't think anyone will claim me."

There are several reasons why the Flyers want additional space today. Various general managers and other league personnel say there will be very few sellers of players and many more bidders than the market can accommodate.

Because the trade deadline is coming so late this season, too many clubs are on the bubble to make the playoffs and for some teams, it means they can't risk losing fans - read: season ticket renewals - for next year by trading away valuable players for a playoff run.

The Flyers are not looking for a home run deal. They don't have the depth to make such a move unless they get quality youth in return, such as Florida center Jolli Jokinen, who will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and has not been able to negotiate a deal with the Panthers. He is expected to attract major attention but the price will be steep.

Former Flyer Mark Recchi is also expected to garner attention. He won't cost as much in players but the Flyers will have competition. Others are Derek Morris, Dallas Drake and Wes Walz.

Because the Flyers have problems across the board, they want to beef up their defense, penalty killing and scoring off the wing. It's unlikely they can do all three. Which is why GM Bob Clarke wants as much cap space as possible, in case he can make just one big move.

Stevenson said since the Olympic break, his right hip has improved and that by next season he will be 100 percent.

"This isn't the end of the world for me," he said.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

NGM

Wow I hope someone else is watching this besides me.  Flyers tie it up with .06 left in the third.

Flyers win in a shootout.   :yay  Once again Forsberg ties it up on the Flyers last chance, Canes miss, Gagne puts it home for the W.

Just got back from the game. The first 2:59.59 of the game was one of the most boring hockey games I ever attended, the rest of the game was unbelievable. The crowd went from a graveyard to fireworks within minutes.

BigEd76

They almost lost again because of you!  >:(

Great end to that game.

They're only 2 points out again because the Rangers lost in a shootout.  Jagr was caught with an illegal stick twice. :-D

Hatcher has a bruised knee for now.  Clarke had better hold onto Richards,Carter, and Umberger.  I liked that PP unit.

RJ Umberger is insignificant, i don't care if they trade him or not.  they need to get speed, and if he is a piece they can use to get it, then it's fine with me.
