That was bad. :boo

And Kasparitis is a stone cold snatch. I was hoping he'd fight Brashear like a man but he curled up like a vadge.

LBIggle

seriously.. even the fight sucked.

Yea, its the olympics fault the Flyers aren't any good.

I will change by name to CorkLover if the Flyers win the cup. Seriously, you can hold me to it. They are always injured and don't have the goaltending. They won't do it. Give up and now starting wasting your time with the Phillies.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

ice grillin you

at this point you almost hope they dont get a goalie because the team isnt good enough to win it all..it would be maddening to get a cup caliber guy in the net and still not win

i had my doubts but its obvious now...injuries or no injuries the flyers simply arent skilled enough to win in the new nhl...it shows in the shootouts and pp on a regular basis...but it really gets exposed against a european ladened team like the rangers

clarke needs to either go or change his philosophy

The big surprise to me is how bad their Defense has been this season, certainly not what you'd expect from a Hitchcock coached team. The injury excuse doesn't fly, because even when they were down 2 or 3 defenseman in the playoffs before the lockout they were still a solid team defensively.

ice grillin you

the injury excuse has merit for sure...how could it not with the amount of games theyve lost...but youre right in that its far from the only reason...for example the defense has lost for long stretches desjardins....jonsson and pitkanen...

randy jones
seidenberg
meyer

i mean come on

but and i said this when it happened siging both hatcher AND rathje was a major mistake...one of them was ok...both was inexcusable..they are exposed on a nightly basis in this new league

the biggest issue in winning a cup (outside of a goalie) is the offense...they dont have any skilled guys outside of gagne and forsberg

too many canadien junior and us college bred players and not enough eurotrash...they are unable to score with these other skilled teams...

ive said this before on this thread defense might have been the name of the game in the trap era but now its all about having a a great goalie who wont implode under the barrage of shots he will face and having an offense that can score with the new rules

Bertuzzi in latest trade rumor

Saturday, March 4, 2006

The latest trade rumor involving the Flyers has goaltender Robert Esche and perhaps Donald Brashear heading to Vancouver for Canucks hulking winger Todd Bertuzzi.

Bertuzzi's agent, Pat Morris, could not be reached for comment on Friday, but his partner, Don Meehan, said he was not aware of such a deal.

"I can tell you on the record I haven't heard a thing like that," Meehan said. "Not a word."

At face value the trade makes little sense because Bertuzzi comes with one year remaining on a contract that pays him $5.269 million a season. Any NHL team that picks up Bertuzzi would be required to pay him a prorated salary for the remainder of this season (about $1.4 million), but the face value of his contract -- $5.269 million -- would count against that team's salary cap.

The Flyers' have about $2.5 million in cap space now that Keith Primeau is gone for the season. Trading Esche would free up another $1 million and including Brashear in the deal would free up an additional $1.748 million. Theoretically, that would free up enough space to fit Bertuzzi under the cap.

If that turns out to be the case, the Flyers essentially would be trading Esche and Brashear to the Canucks for one of the NHL's most dominant power forwards.

In 60 games this season, Bertuzzi has 20 goals, 33 assists and 98 penalty minutes, but played poorly for Team Canada in the Olympics.

Bertuzzi, 31, also carries some heavy baggage. He was suspended 20 games for attacking Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Moore from behind during the 2003-04 season, an attack that resulted in Moore's career ending with a broken neck. Bertuzzi pleaded guilty to criminal assault for the attack on Moore and recently completed one year of probation. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman reinstated Bertuzzi in August and the 6-foot-3, 245-pound right wing has been a force with the Canucks, averaging nearly 20 minutes of ice time a game.

Loose pucks: Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki is expected to start tonight's game after relieving Esche in Thursday night's debacle. Esche allowed three goals on seven shots in that game, while Niittymaki allowed three goals on 19 shots. . . .Flyers left wing Simon Gagne (bruised knee) and center Michal Handzus (shoulder sprain) will sit out their third straight games tonight when the Flyers visit the Islanders. Coach Ken Hitchcock said he is growing more and more concerned about the long-term availability of defenseman Kim Johnsson, who has been sidelined with a concussion since Jan. 28. "He's not progressing and we only have five weeks left in the season," Hitchcock said. With that in mind, look for the Flyers to make a deal for a depth defenseman before Thursday's trade deadline. . . .Meanwhile, the Flyers' special teams continue to flounder. They went 1-for-9 on the power play Thursday night, while allowing the Rangers to score on four of six advantages. They now rank 19th in the NHL on the power play (62 for 349, 17.8 percent) and have fallen to 26th on the penalty kill (271 of 344, 78.8 percent). -- Chuck Gormley
