then spend the 5 mill to make this year's team better...

Just an FYI--In terms of 'overall payroll' we're second highest in the league behind the Skins.

General_Failure

So what? There's $12 mil under the cap that they're not spending. This makes them cheaper than even the Cardinals.

Simon had no trade value with the franchise tag.  He knew he'd make $5m+ on a Super Bowl contender if he didn't accept the new team's offer, so he asked for a ton from the perspective suitors.  Once he was cut from the tag, his demands went drastically down.  When another contending team offered him basically the same as the franchise tag (except all up front), he basically had to take it.  This contract is the equivalent of him signing a one year deal and then the team having the option to sign him to a new deal with an $8m signing bonus.

And that was the best offer he could get.

so you're saying a series of miscalculations by the eagles' front office led to them losing a former 1st round pick & pro bowler & getting nothing in return...now we're getting somewhere. :-D

yeah...that's relevant.

dope.

As I've said before, I'd rather the money is used to line Lurie's pockets than to pay Simon.

Simon sucks.  A waste of talent like him on the team only makes the team worse.  A coach/GM has to show his players that working hard for the good of the team is rewarded.  The DT's in camp were working hard and playing well, so they are rewarded with an extra roster spot to fight for.

Farg Simon.

They lose players every year and get nothing in return. It's called free agency. They tried to trade him. Once again...I ask if you missed that part of it, bro.

General_Failure

If they would have just given him a super duper offer two years ago he probably never would have gotten out of shape and he'd still be the second most overhyped DT after Sapp.

They miscalculated nothing, except Simon's laziness.  They figured that an in-decent-shape Simon for a 1-year, $5m deal was good for the Eagles.  As they started to realize he wouldn't play until he absolutely had to, despite wanting huge money and having only minimal footing/proof to deserve it, they tried to trade him.  That didn't work, so they kept him on the tag as insurance until they got through most of the pre-season healthy and solid at the DT position.  When that happened, they cut ties with him.

It was ridiculously thoroughly calculated, from start to finish.

And even if they didn't rescind the FT this year - he leaves after the season and they get nothing for him then too.

Simon looked like crap. I'm betting, like I said earlier, that IND doesn't pay him his $8M bonus in March and he's a UFA again.

Yep, and whether they use the "Banner loophole" to push the cap room to 2006 or use the money to extend some players that actually deserve to be a part of this team for years to come... I can still rest easy known that they didn't flush it down Corey Simon's toilet.  Literally.

I knew that, but the fact still remains that spending every dollar under the cap, even if the value is simply not there, is not generally a smart idea.  Banner can find many hidden ways to "squirrel" it away.

Long after the John Claytons and Len Pasquerellis have stopped keeping track of cap room, Banner always makes a couple of small adjustments in veteran contracts.  To the best of my recollection, the Eagles have never finished a cap year more than $3m under the cap.

Well that $5 mil from Simon is all going to Akers, so that leaves seven mil to split between Westbrook, M Lewis, and incentive bonuses.
