He's not going to "play himself into shape" this time. Even if/when he does lose some of that weight he's still not the DT who he was drafted to be. He is/was supposed to be a pocket collapsing, pass rushing DT who could generate heat on QBs.

He's not going to be able to use his quickness because that quickness is gone. Last night he was the sole Colts DL who was getting stuffed at the point-of-attack.

He's a pass rushing DT who is now built like a run stuffing DT. Problem is...he cannot stop the run.

so either trade him & get something in return or line up a big bag filled with 5 million dollars & see if it can make a stop on 3rd & 2 cuz they sure haven't spent any of it to improve the team.

This 5-man DT rotation will be better than last year.

Simon had no trade value with the franchise tag.  He knew he'd make $5m+ on a Super Bowl contender if he didn't accept the new team's offer, so he asked for a ton from the perspective suitors.  Once he was cut from the tag, his demands went drastically down.  When another contending team offered him basically the same as the franchise tag (except all up front), he basically had to take it.  This contract is the equivalent of him signing a one year deal and then the team having the option to sign him to a new deal with an $8m signing bonus.

And that was the best offer he could get.

Indy has that $8M option bonus to pay him in March '06. I say he doesn't get it.
