Anyone seen a good movie lately?

The Kingdom: Disappointing. There was a good plot but it was not given enough attention, IMO. The movie felt rushed and the ending was a let down. I felt like it was incomplete and could have been much better.

being that i frequent a few message boards, i noticed that the nerd factor on Blade Runner being re-released is pretty high.  has anybody ever seen it?

i never even really heard of it, but i read about it on Wiki and it sounds interesting.  it certainly sounds as if it attacts the typical Trekkie, Star Wars nerd following.

Since I fall into that category I thought the same thing, I bought it used 5 or 6 years ago for like 5 bucks and watched it. It's not bad but I didn't think it was all that great either. The futuristic society involving cyborgs is somewhat interesting but the cult following sees a deeper meaning I have just never gotten or cared to look for.

this is so true...and is a huge part of what makes this movie nauseating...in their quest to give meaning to their lives thru cinema the nerds can assign a non existent hidden meaning to a movie that is good...however blade runner by itself is a bad movie...so you combine those two factors and it ends up being one of the nerdiest motion pictures of all time

There are two versions of Blade Runner.  The first is the original theatrical release and the second is the so-called director's cut.  The second version was released about 10 years after the original and was hailed at the time as a masterpiece.  I've seen both probably 10 times or more and I can say without reservation that the original version is much, much better, at least in my opinion.

Ridley Scott would say different because the studio basically took the movie out of his hands when it was finished and released it in such a way that would be more easily understood by a mass audience.  Count me as one of the mass audience who liked the less "artistic" version.

As far as its allegorical content, the movie is your standard cautionary tale of the potential dangers of surrendering our freedom in return for convenience and comfort.

Blade Runner is a classic. The 'deeper meaning' that people find in it comes from the Philip K. Dick book it was based on, which explains why IGY would not be able to speak intelligently on it and finds the very concept nerdy and 'nauseating'.

Yeah, but you love Dick, so you can't be impartial.

Now that I have that important piece of business settled, Blade Runner was very good.

there is no deeper meaning...thats the whole point...

its made up by people who have no life in the real world and the way they make an existence for themselves is to create something that only they can "understand" so they can go to conventions and talk about how "deep" it is and that no one "gets it" like we do...and voila!! they have a reason for being on earth

like the movie all you want there are def people out there that live for that kind of shtein...but please spare us with the deeper meaning of life nerd psycho analysis of a sci fi movie...its highly annoying to us and embarrassing for you...but the people i would imagine its most offensive to would be the people that like blade runner but realize its entertainment that shouldnt be sullied by the army of geeky psuedo intellectuals.....let entertainment be just that...

I'll agree with that. My point simply was that (supposedly) the book has a lot of points that are only hinted at in the movie, leaving much open for discussion by the 'nerds'.

If you're making the point that there is nothing deeper, fine. If you're saying that there's nothing further to discuss beyond the surface of the movie and you feel that way about all of the mediums of entertainment you take in then you're missing out on a lot of the enjoyment that other people get from them.

Hardy har har. Actually, I've only ever tried to read one Dick novel and wasn't able to finish it. He seems to have some great ideas for his stories, socially speaking and in a sci-fi-story sense, but can't write worth a shtein. I'll probably give him another shot at some point, but I don't find his writing style very readable.

SuperBad was awesome, yesterday I watched Grandma's Boy with my brother and dad, it was funnier than Superbad

You are to be shot tomorrow. Superbad is definitely superior to Grandma's Boy.

Edit: I'm still loving this kid's Christopher Walken impression from the Superbad extra DVD

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Watched Transformers yesterday.

Meh.

There's a scene in "Big" where Tom Hanks asks what's fun about things turning into other things.  I kept thinking about that line during the movie.  It wasn't a particularly enjoyable movie to watch.  It was cool to a point but there was something missing.  Maybe it was the horrible acting, laughable screenplay and total absence of any sort of coherent and logical plotline?

Whatever.  There are worse ways to spend a couple of hours.

Not many, though.

Grandma's Boy is very underrated.  I laugh my ass on every time I flick by it.  the kid with the roommates (his parents) is hilarious.
