the most shocking part of the movie was how good joe madden was...if he ever decides to stop managing baseball he has a career as an actor waiting for him

lol

I wasn't really in a rush to see it, mostly because I think that Wolverine has been too much of a focal point in the X-Men series at the expense of other great characters, but going to the movies is one of the few activities that Squaw can do while she's rehabbing her knee and we just needed to get out of the house for a few hours.  So we decided to see it.  Definitely glad we did though.

saw it this weekend at home. agreed, good movie on it's own without the  superhero angle. no idea where this thing fit in timeline wise, but it doesn't matter, good all around movie with a dark edge and a sad end for two long lived characters.
If guns kill people then spoons made Rosie O'Donnel a fatass.

It takes place like maybe 10-15 years in the future is my understanding...like maybe 2030ish.

Also, I think you quoted the wrong post.  Lol

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Explain to me.. what was so good about it?  I'm not being a fleshpop, it's a serious question.  I can't for the life of me figure out why people are raving about the his movie outside of the satirical aspect of it...which was good and humorous, but not really a critical element to a suspense/thriller.

I probably won't say anything too different than what you may have read in online reviews and such, but...

1. I thought it was pretty damn creepy. I felt uncomfortable almost the whole time and that was great. I grew up on the slasher flicks, but I enjoy the just general feeling of unease and creepyness in movies like this.

2. The movie had a lot of great metaphors about how the everyday casual racism that a lot of people (read: white) view as harmless isn't actually harmless. Obviously the movie goes over the top in taking it to it's illogical conclusion that white people are literally taking over black bodies, but there's a lot of message in there. Some of it was on the nose (i.e. the taking over of black bodies/the "black is in" stuff standing in for cultural appropriation and how white people just tend to steal everything black people do, the 'micro-aggressions' of the people just touching him and treating him as basically not a person, etc), but that just made it better, IMO. Definitely agree with some people saying it's supposed to make white people actually feel a little bit of what a black person feels when around a lot of white people. I especially loved the "being around white people makes me nervous" line, because I can't imagine how many times white people have felt the same way around just a handful of black people, and I don't think white people realize or believe they give black people any reason to feel the same.

3. I know the 'body-snatching' story has been done a thousand times over but I just enjoyed the way this movie it did. Wasn't aliens, wasn't monsters, wasn't some secret government program...just crazy ass suburban peeps.

4. Even throughout the creepyness, the whole movie still somehow had a slight Key and Peele sketch vibe...like you were waiting for the over the top story to end with some funny joke that just never really came. Was some great comic relief from the TSA guy though.

I've seriously not read a single review of the movie, just saw that it was getting universal praise and high ratings.

Quote1. I thought it was pretty damn creepy. I felt uncomfortable almost the whole time and that was great. I grew up on the slasher flicks, but I enjoy the just general feeling of unease and creepyness in movies like this.

To me, this was the biggest miss of the whole movie.  The deer on the road was pretty much the only part of the movie that actually made me flinch a bit.  I thought everything else was really predictable.

Quote2. The movie had a lot of great metaphors about how the everyday casual racism that a lot of people (read: white) view as harmless isn't actually harmless. I definitely agree on this.  Pretty much every movie in this genre has been very white-centric.  And if there's ever black people in the movie, they almost always die.  So it was great/funny to see this told from a different perspective and I'll give the movie some credit for being kind of groundbreaking in that regard.

Quote3. I know the 'body-snatching' story has been done a thousand times over but I just enjoyed the way this movie it did. Wasn't aliens, wasn't monsters, wasn't some secret government program...just crazy ass suburban peeps.

I think this probably falls in line with #2 as a (not so) subtle way of saying that a black dude's biggest fear in this country isn't aliens or ghosts, but just crazy farging white people.

Quote4. Even throughout the creepyness, the whole movie still somehow had a slight Key and Peele sketch vibe...like you were waiting for the over the top story to end with some funny joke that just never really came. Was some great comic relief from the TSA guy though.

TSA guy gave me some chuckles but a lot of his humor felt either forced or way too stereotypical.  I dunno...maybe that was the point of it...to mock some of the overdone/played out aspects of black comedy?

I had no idea until after the movie that it was done by Peele of Key and Peele, but it definitely explains why I didn't come out of the theater overly impressed.  Their comedy is very much hit or miss with me.  Funny thing is that the satire of the movie is easily the best part of it, which is probably why I didn't enjoy it as much.  I think this could have been way better had they gone the dark comedy route with it instead.  The movie just seemed to lack a true identity to me.  Whatevs though.  People seem to love it and I'm happy for them.

Is Fences worth renting?

fences - the story is relatively boring but that may have had to do with me knowing what was going to happen since I was familiar with the play and it's entirely too long but easily worth seeing for the acting clinic Denzel and viola put on

7/10

I rented it and agree with the review you posted. I thought they were both great but I found the story leaving me wanting more depth.

Live By Night

0/10

Was excited when I saw the trailers. I love gangster movies. This one was brutal. First attemp to watch I shut it off a half hour in. Figured I'd try when I didn't have anything else going on. Put it back on the other day and didn't finish it. Awful.

Justice League trailer dropped today.  Expectations aren't high after Batman v Superman, but it this one looks like it might be worth a watch.
