im not even talking about bad or good cops...im talking cops who at heart are good people but range from undertrained to inexperienced to naïve to clueless to having never even had to use their handgun to now being in possession of virtual tanks and machine guns etc...

Oh, definitely.  The type of equipment that's been made available to nearly every PD across the country is mind blowing.  We have small town PDs that are better equipped than some countries' military forces.  And the level of training they get is definitely substandard.  I'm learning a lot about how PDs operate now that squaw is back on duty.  Her small town PD naturally has a small town budget.  She's been with them for almost a year now and other than having to qualify with her service weapon when she was hired, she hasn't been back to the range since.  No one in her dept has as far as I know.  And there's 1 guy who hasn't been to the range for like 5 years.  That's amazing to me.  And by amazing I really mean shtein my pants frightening.  They say that they just don't have the training budget to get range time.

That's not to say they don't practice with their weapons.  They do.  A local gun club lets cops come in and shoot for free, but the cops still have to provide their own ammo.  But the fact that there's no formal weapons training and annual reinforcement of weapons training is just mind blowing.  Not the cops' fault.  They're doing the best they can with what they've got.  But again, if small town PDs like this aren't able to properly train their cops with just the basic weapons, I can't fathom how bad the training is for the smaller PDs around the country who have been given access to military grade equipment.

yeah its frightening....the only saving grace is that rarely will any of these places ever have a need for these things...problem is when they are in your possession rotting away and not being used sometimes you make up or find reasons to use them...they are almost like cool toys to these people

Exactly.  This is one of the few things I've actually gotten squaw to completely agree with me on.  PDs don't need tanks or urban assault vehicles.  Not even large cities like NY or LA.  If shtein gets that real, then call in the Nat'l Guard.  They have tanks and they've actually been trained on how to use them.    Jon Oliver did a great segment on this a while back right after Ferguson.  It was probably posted in here before but I'll post it again in case anyone missed it.  FF to about the 7 min mark.  Truly great shtein.

Agreed with both of ya.

There's no need to have departments outfitted with full blown military equipment. It is intimidating to see officers in those outfits. Combine that with jumpy trigger fingers and the attitudes that many possess and you've got a bad recipe.

Yes there should be swat teams. Yes there should be equipment on hand to be used when needed. But a cop on crowd duty doesn't need to be standing next to an armored vehicle wearing fatigues with a handgun strapped to each thigh and an ar-15 slung across their chest.
