QuoteCleveland police officers use guns, Tasers, pepper spray and their fists either unnecessarily or in retaliation, while using excessive force on those "who are mentally ill or in crisis," a Justice Department investigation found.

As a result of this "pattern ... of unreasonable and unnecessary use of force," the city and Justice Department have signed an agreement "to develop a court-enforceable consent decree that will include a requirement for an independent monitor who will oversee and ensure necessary reforms."

The cigarette tax argument made by Rand Paul and others is a red herring and distracting from the real issue.

If you want to say that the government shouldn't have tedious laws like this because it provides more incentive for police to overreach, fine.  But that's completely distracting away from the real issue.

This could have been any nonviolent crime and it would've been wildly inappropriate to do what the officer did.
I had zero clue that this was brought up, just was making it up off the cuff.  And you're right IGY, I'm not a fan of that quote either, because it does trivialize what happened.

It wasn't directed @ you SB, just seems to be a talking point today on the right after Rand Paul basically blamed what happened on the cigarette tax.

it pisses me off more than anything because by setting the bar so low for a black man losing his life it doesnt take much to reach justification standards of other black men being killed....like ok maybe for a cigarette you dont deserve to die but just a little more than that then we can justify it...like punching george zimmerman in his face or shoplifting...or resisting arrest or selling drugs

me or you dont think like this but theres a shtein ton of people in this country who are looking for anything to defend the killing of a person of color....how about a starting point of no unarmed man deserves to die and go from there

The other reason it pisses me off is people are using such a large umbrella for government overstepping its bounds.

Basically all of these sentences like - well if there weren't cigarette taxes AND stop and frisk this wouldn't be a problem!

Cigarette taxes and stop and frisk policies are not remotely the same regarding their impact of minority communities and this has given occasion for people to just group it all in the same tent which is disingenuous.

We DO need to deal with things like stop and frisk.  It trivializes real problems like that by linking taxation to the issue.

smeags

not surpirsed to see a politician use a tragedy to promote their own agenda over the real issue.

Yup.

If people on the left were using this event and pointing to the oft used excuse that has been spit out by some pundits "How could they know if he was armed or not? For all they know, he has a gun in his back pocket!" as a chance to say "Well, if we're at the point where we think it's okay for cops to just assume everyone is armed, locked and loaded, and that assumption is getting people killed perhaps it's time we step back and take a look at the extreme availability of guns in our country as the "root problem"".....FoxNews and right wing pundits would be having a conniption, accusing the left and Obama and whoever else of using the tragedy to further their own policy goals.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

bottom line is a man is dead and just because the person who killed him wears a badge he won't face any criminal charges. eventhough the hold he used was barred by the police department because it can result in a person's death !

that is bullshtein.

Ferguson protesters win injunction to stop cops using tear gas

QuoteFERGUSON, Missouri – A federal judge ruled Thursday that police can no longer use tear gas on protesters without declaring an illegal assembly, giving them fair warning and time to vacate the area.

The temporary restraining order comes just weeks after the last rounds of heavy protest in Ferguson in response to a St. Louis County grand jury's decision not to indict the police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown Jr. A group of protesters had filed the lawsuit asking for a restriction on police use of tear gas and excessive force during demonstrations.

Minority congressional staffers plan walkout in wake of Brown, Garner decisions

QuoteWashington (CNN) -- Congressional staffers plan to walk off their jobs Thursday afternoon to show their support for the families of Michael Brown and Eric Garner in the wake of the decision by two grand juries not to indict the police officers responsible for their deaths, according to three staffers who plan to participate in the event.
The planned walkout comes after days of protests across the country, including in Washington, D.C., where demonstrators have marched through downtown, blocking roads and bridges on an almost nightly basis since last Wednesday's decision by a grand jury in Staten Island not to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the chokehold death of Garner.

The man. The myth. The legend.
