QuoteAndy Martino of the New York Daily News hears from "people involved in the process" that the Phillies are "strong contenders" for Cuban outfielder Yasmany Tomas.
The Phillies appear to have strong interest in Tomas, as general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. flew to the Dominican Republic to personally scout Tomas. While the Padres and Dodgers have been mentioned as possibilities, Martino hears that they are "far less likely" as potential landing spots. The Tigers have also been added to the list of potential suitors, which includes the Twins, Giants, and Rangers, among others. The Mets and Yankees are not expected to be players for the 23-year-old outfielder, who could end up with a $100 million contract.

i knew this was gonna happen

these cuban player situations are 1000% bidding wars. the players have no say in where they go, nor do they even know what city is what (save for the yankees). their handlers decide it, and their handles want money. out of the big market teams with bloated tv deals and more cash than they know what to do with, the phillies are the ones with (3) open spots in the outfield. think about it.

the yankees have gardner and ellsbury, red sox and dodgers have 100 guys, cubs need to spend their money on pitching, angels have hamilton and trout, mets are a farce. its just the phillies. YASMANY!
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

ice grillin you

at least hes only 23....but im OUT...they don't need anymore huge wasteful contracts....develop your own players over the next 5-7 years and take your chances....theres not a doubt in my mind this ends badly for the phils...because see heres the thing....if the phillies get him you know its because hes not that good and the bidding wasn't a war....yet still somehow they will overpay for him

QuoteOverall, Law contends that a reasonable projection for Tomas would be an "average to slightly above-average regular in left field, with 25 to 30 homers, a low OBP and below-average defense."

McDaniel also is skeptical of Tomas' hit tool and wonders whether or not it will affect his power frequency in the major leagues, writing: "Scouts think that inclination and bat speed will lead to a 45 or 50 bat (.250-.260 average, .320-.330 on-base) and the question is if that will be enough to get his 25 homer power in games, or he ends up being a platoon bat."

its definitely a risk but its just money...and they have loads of it

hes not blocking anybody, hes not going to ruin their title hopes. they really have nothing to lose, other than 100 million dollars of jon middleton's money.

and again the bidding war belongs to the phils because of circumstance that i explained. they really are competing with themselves for him, so long as the yankees are truly out.

no one right now.....but thats the point....because your system currently sucks isnt an excuse to go out and reach for a cuban defector....they need 5 years or so to build up their system.....over bidding cause roob somehow thinks they can win now is the exact thing they shouldn't be doing....this thing should be done the right way and that's gonna take tons of patience and year and years

that said i have no idea what the money is going to be....so if this kid costs 30 mil for four years or somewhere in the ballpark of what a middle of the road mlb free agent would take to get then whatever who cares....but i suspect this kid will be massively overpaid by the phillies

actually it is

yasmany is 24....theyd be signing him for when hes 27 or 28, when they project to be good again. and again its just money. hes not blocking anybody. they dont have a corner OF to develop anywhere close to the big leagues. again theres nothing but money to lose on him...if it doesnt work it wont hurt their chances of doing anything else.

its like the papelbon deal. stupid but irrelevant.

Sign everyone!

they actually could, to an extent. the salary year to start focusing on is 2020....who the phillies pay between now and then means nothing. you have to look at when aaron nola, franco, jp crawford, and whoever they trade hamels for as being FAs around that year. thats when the money starts getting real.

All they need to do is eliminate Howard, Rollins, Utley, Chooch, Papelbon & Lee's deals and they're back in contention just like that!

MDS

they need to eliminate the players, not the contracts

i know its tough for old people to understand this but the phillies have an obscene amount of money and can spend tons of it
