Yeah I'm all for shteinting on the Democrats when they deserve it but, in this instance, this is a shutdown (and debt ceiling problem) perpetrated solely by the Republican Party. The Democrats already "negotiated" on spending, passing a CR that was close to Paul Ryan-budget levels, much closer to those levels than what Senate Dems wanted.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Really fellas?  That's your take away from this?

I'm a little baffled by people's reactions too.

republicans blaming everyone and not just dems (the right would never solely blame the right when obama is an option) shows how woefully unpopular the republican party is right now

Really fellas?  That's your take away from this?

I'm a little baffled by people's reactions too. Though for different reasons. It's amazingly intellectually lazy for people to look at this situation and say 'both sides are to blame'. The GOP has been planning this shutdown for months and now that it's here, suddenly it's the democrats fault too? Luckily the huge majority of the country recognizes who's to blame here.

Obviously the latter half of my comment was a poor attempt at humor, but this is what I tend to agree with in regards to the shut down.

Yes, politicians are by and large, despicable people regardless of party affiliation and share practically equal amounts of blame for the overall state of the country.  But when it comes to the shut down itself, that video is a perfect example of just how deplorable the GOP is and I suspect this is the reason why a recent Gallup poll showed that the GOP has an approval rating of 38%.

QuoteRepublicans More Likely to See Own Party Unfavorably

Self-identified Republicans are more than twice as likely to view their own party unfavorably (27%) as Democrats are to see their own party unfavorably (13%). The GOP's unfavorable rating among Republicans is up eight points from September, compared with a one-point rise in Democratic Party unfavorables among Democrats. These findings may be consistent with the widely circulated narrative that the Republican Party is internally splintered on how best to handle the budgetary negotiations.

Independents, meanwhile, remain unimpressed with both parties: Thirty-two percent view the Democratic Party favorably, while 27% view the Republican Party favorably.

So one party is indifferent, one party is batshtein crazy, and everyone else hates both parties.

What a refreshing take on politics.

Son of slain Wisconsin Sikh temple leader to run against Paul Ryan

QuoteKaleka's father, Satwant Singh Kaleka, was a small-business owner who founded the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in suburban Milwaukee. On Aug. 5, 2012, a white supremacist walked into the temple and opened fire, killing Kaleka and five others before taking his own life. The FBI was unable to determine a motive.

Really, FBI? You can't think of one reason why a white supremacist would start shooting up a brown people church?

The Republicans own this debacle lock stock & barrel.

In addition to the points made already about how they've been angling for a shutdown/ultimatum on the budget and the debt ceiling, and how they've refused to go to committee with the budget the Senate passed at Republican spending levels, I would point out that despite every single reasonable authority on the matter, including many many Republicans and Conservatives, they abjectly refuse to consider any budget that includes a discussion of finding more Revenue.

The consensus is clear:  cuts and Revenue must both happen in order to improve the economic situation.  Dems, including the President, have said, and shown by actions, a willingness to give some on entitlements, etc. but the Republicans won't talk unless Revenue is off the table.

The problem right now is a Republican one.  To say it's both sides is intellectually dishonest.  It's a false equivalent.

Also, this is going to utterly ruin the Republicans for a long time.  These extremists in the safe districts aren't going away in the house.  They'll keep farging the GOP until it splits and we get three parties for a while.  Dems, Republicans, and the American Taliban.  Eventually the latter group will die out/get voted out by changing demographics but in the meantime, the Dems will have a lot of powerfor a long time.

Not sure that's a good thing, to be honest.

I'm pretty unhappy with the political machine in Maryland.  I like how liberal we are, but I do NOT like how little debate there is, how few new ideas and new people bubble up in the system, etc.   I digress.

It's not, and I don't think I need to explain why.

Just to be clear, I'm talking in general terms about my overall,  aggregate disgust. This particular debacle is pretty clear. It's ridiculous. That said, pledging allegiance to any of those fargers is a folly. It's just a matter of degree of ego driven ridiculousness that's crippling.

The GOP continues to make themselves look like fools.

It infuriates me that people actually buy their shtein.

Chick in our office was talking about "Obama shutting down the govt and keeping all the war veterans out of their memorials"

I almost flipped my shtein. All I said was "um, the grand ol' party has been planning and hoping for this for months. Ted Cruz and John Boehner. I gotta go before I start to stab myself with this letter opener"
