and fumble every time someone breathes on him...perfect for a read option offense

it amazes me people cant see that vick sucks. he isnt good at football anymore. in fact he probably never was. at one point he definitely wasnt "bad." but as of now he very much is.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

hes not implementing the oregon offense in full....but i think it would be pretty shocking if he didnt put in an option package...maybe not right away if he cant get his qb..i mean hes not gonna run it next year if foles is the qb...but why hire him in the first place if he isnt going to do some version of his oregon offense that includes an option set...wouldnt make much sense

I think we'll certainly see a lot of the pistol formation at a minimum. The thing with Kelly more than anything is he wants to run the ball. He'll do it anyway he can. I can also foresee a lot of two back sets with Shady and Brown.

Don't the newly-proposed regulations outlaw the pistol offense?

General_Failure

You need a license for it, but you can go shotgun whenever you want.

It's probably safe to say that we won't be seeing the pistol in Philly since only 3 qbs in the history of the NFL have been able to successfully execute it. Kelly was hired because "he's got a great football mind."

the pistol is a formation not an offense

lol at the 'history of the nfl' when talking about the read option....it just entered the league as an offense a couple years ago and has been very successful...chip kelly ran this kind of offense at oregon...his great football mind is versed in this offense...you dont hire chip kelly expecting him to run a pro set or a west coast offense...he was hired because he is supposedly a genius in what is all the rage in the nfl right now

for the record i dont know that the zone read is here to stay or a fad...and i dont support the chip kelly hiring in any way...my only point is from an eagle perspective how do you hire this guy and not have him run an offense that includes it...thats what the guy does

all this 'we will adapt to our players' talk is for the immediate future...but long term i cant see him not putting together a roster of players that fit this kind of system

pistol is used in the option offense

Not always. It's a formation, and you can run the option from it, but you can also have a run game using many of the same run plays you would have in a typical single or two back set. You can run the pistol without a QB being a run threat.

Quote
Chris Ault, inventor of the pistol formation, believes even the slower quarterbacks could pull it off if done properly. Case in point: Eli Manning and the New York Giants.

"[The Giants] could run the pistol formation," Ault said Tuesday on NFL AM. "They don't need to run the read part of it. When we first put the pistol in, in 2005 and 2006 (at Nevada), that's all we ran. We ran the power, the gaps, the counters, the zones, the outside stuff. We did not run the read at that time. So, the pistol offense, the most important thing there, is you can run any offense you've been running. And this is how we created it, and then we advanced the pistol run game — the read part of it — two years later."
"The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.""  R.I.P George.

QB Eagles

Quote from: ice grillin you on January 22, 2013, 10:10:55 PMvick has zero chance to be an eagle next year.....no one in the current regime ever wanted him as a person or a player...not to mention to run a read option offense you have to be smart and be able to make quick multiple choice decisions...something vick is completely inept at...hes also lost two steps and would get hurt in the first half of the opener

Yeah... I can sort of understand national media guys who don't follow Vick or the Eagles too closely thinking "Chip Kelly... running QB.... maybe they'll keep Vick." But I think anyone who's been paying any attention to Vick, the Eagles' needs, or the way the Eagles do business would be completely stunned if the Eagles keep that washed up dude at any price.

And not only stunned but crushed if they care about the franchise.

Kelly is excited about using Pimp, Maclin, and Shady in his offense, not a guy who used to be fast.

thats the shotgun I....been around for decades....in fact andy ran it all the time

i guess some football nerds might have renamed it the pistol...but the pistol to me is different and is attached to a read option offense...hence the term being coined in the last view years

Zanshin

Well, it's more like a shallow variation of the shotgun. Which is probably why it's call the pistol in the first place.
