In that case, carry on with your shame and disgust, it's well placed.

Found out 3 things that make me feel a bit better about it.

1.  There was a large group of alumni who were unhappy about this.

2.  Romney rented the hall he spoke in, so at least the school got paid. (hope it was cash because I heard his campaign is $11 mil in debt)

3.  It wasn't mandatory for students to go and they needed permission from their teachers to miss class.

It still makes me feel icky though just knowing he was there.

Sassy... what's the deal with military peeps supporting that farghead?   I see pro-Romney shtein on vehicles with ex-military insignias everywhere down here.  I know it's an old white thing, but seriously, how can a retiree living on a pension support that worthless vulture?

The military is a largely conservative/Republican culture.  They're quite ironic/hypocritical because many of their own views and beliefs contradict the Constitution that they've pledged their lives to defend. That hypocrisy really makes them the perfect Republican if you think about it.

My own political and (lack of) religious beliefs gave me the opportunity to experience that 1st hand since I was a bit of an outcast my last 7-10 years.  Hell, I was the only person in my last unit to openly support the repeal of DADT and there were quite a few people who didn't like that one bit.

Was that one of the primary reasons the upper echelon farged you over for extending your service?    It wouldn't surprise me in the least because bigotry & intolerance are hallmarks of MA existence in this country.

Also - I know everyone says how much they support the troops and all that, but honestly, many of the retired service people I've met are awful human beings and aren't worth supporting whatsoever.  Not all, obviously, but many of them are cops or are otherwise involved in law enforcement, and like you said, I doubt few of them have ever actually read or understand the document they've pledged their lives to support & defend.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Nah, I don't think so.  It's not like I was actively trying to promote my political or religious views at work.  And by the time the repeal of DADT took place (summer 2011), I was already on the shtein list with some of my higher ups.  Some of which was my own doing because I occasionally tell the wrong people to pound sand, but most of it was because I was an easy target to point the finger at when shtein got farged up.  I was in a helicopter squadron and my shop was the only one that didn't work on or fly the aircraft, which meant we weren't part of the cool kids club.  In every culture there are subcultures and the military is no different.  I spent my entire career on the ground side of the Corps and when I got to the air side I was pretty much a fish out of water.  Maybe if I had minded my P's and Q's a little more, I'd still have a job and would be inching my way towards retirement, but that's never really been the way I operate.  If I could go back and do it all again, I'd still tell the same people to get bent because it's something that they needed to hear.

I honestly could go on for days about the shtein I've seen servicemen do or heard them say that would make your head explode.  I've said for years that the ranks of our military is a reflection on our society.  It's full of racists, criminals, religious zealots, drug users, athletes, geniuses, nice guys, iceholes and everyone in between.  All the talk about honor and code and commitment in the military is a bunch of bull.  They're just corporate catch phrases dressed up in camouflage.  Always has been, always will be.  For a short time during my first few years in the service, I felt that the uniform made me better than everyone else but eventually I realized it doesn't.  Problem is that there aren't too many people who figure that out and walk around the rest of their miserable lives thinking that society owes them something and that's why so many of the retirees and veterans you meet can be some of the most unbearable pricks you'll ever encounter.

The current issue of Vanity Fair has an excellent article by Michael Lewis about what it's like to be President Barack Obama, gleaned from unprecedented access to the President over a six month span.  I highly recommend it.

paul ryan on fox news today...

QuoteFor much of the general election, the Romney campaign has avoided any discussion of specifics, especially when it comes to the tax plan that he and Paul Ryan have put forward. On Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace gave Ryan an opportunity to finally talk about the details of his plan to a national audience, how much it will cost and how the Romney administration would pay for it.

Instead, Ryan said he didn't have time to talk about it:

WALLACE: So how much would it cost?

RYAN: It's revenue neutral...

WALLACE: No no, I'm just talking about cuts. We'll get to the deductions, but the cut in tax rates.

RYAN: The cut in tax rates is lowering all Americans' tax rates by 20 percent.

WALLACE: Right, how much does that cost?

RYAN: It's revenue neutral.
[...]
WALLACE: But I have to point out, you haven't given me the math.

Ryan: No, but you...well, I don't have the time. It would take me too long to go through all of the math. But let me say it this way: you can lower tax rates by 20 percent across the board by closing loopholes and still have preferences for the middle class. For things like charitable deductions, for home purchases, for health care. So what we're saying is, people are going to get lower tax rates.

WHICH fargING LOOPHOLES?

They treat their base and the voters like they're idiots. "We're going to cut taxes and make up the revenue by closing loopholes". Well name the farging loopholes. We know Romney is an expert in exploiting loopholes so show us the plan.

The retort from the right is "nobody knew Obama's plan when he was elected" which is complete horseshtein because he stated:
1. He wanted to cut taxes for the middle class
2. Wanted to pass Obamacare
3. Wanted to end the war in Iraq
