All the talk about honor and code and commitment in the military is a bunch of bull.  They're just corporate catch phrases dressed up in camouflage.  Always has been, always will be.

Sorry bro, can't let that one go by.  All the talk about honor and commitment is 100% spot on.  Are there hypocrites and morons that taint the service, no doubt.  In the end, the uniform never made you better than anyone, it made you the same.  The same that served at Iwo Jima, the same at the Chosin Resovoir, the same at the Pentagon on Sept 11.  They can never take that from you.

Now the rest of you can carry on with your disparaging of veterans, catholics and MA (hard working class America).  We will still be fighting for your right to burn our flag.

Munson

I mean, he is a veteran. I don't think he's burning flags anytime soon.

But yeah, most of the people referred to as "MA" by people on this board are statistically the group most dependent on programs like welfare, food stamps, etc....aka poor white people from red states.

But I think the whole "MA" thing is dumb as do most of the posters here.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Was that one of the primary reasons the upper echelon farged you over for extending your service?    It wouldn't surprise me in the least because bigotry & intolerance are hallmarks of MA existence in this country.

Nah, I don't think so.  It's not like I was actively trying to promote my political or religious views at work.  And by the time the repeal of DADT took place (summer 2011), I was already on the shtein list with some of my higher ups.  Some of which was my own doing because I occasionally tell the wrong people to pound sand, but most of it was because I was an easy target to point the finger at when shtein got farged up.  I was in a helicopter squadron and my shop was the only one that didn't work on or fly the aircraft, which meant we weren't part of the cool kids club.  In every culture there are subcultures and the military is no different.  I spent my entire career on the ground side of the Corps and when I got to the air side I was pretty much a fish out of water.  Maybe if I had minded my P's and Q's a little more, I'd still have a job and would be inching my way towards retirement, but that's never really been the way I operate.  If I could go back and do it all again, I'd still tell the same people to get bent because it's something that they needed to hear.

Also - I know everyone says how much they support the troops and all that, but honestly, many of the retired service people I've met are awful human beings and aren't worth supporting whatsoever.  Not all, obviously, but many of them are cops or are otherwise involved in law enforcement, and like you said, I doubt few of them have ever actually read or understand the document they've pledged their lives to support & defend.

I honestly could go on for days about the shtein I've seen servicemen do or heard them say that would make your head explode.  I've said for years that the ranks of our military is a reflection on our society.  It's full of racists, criminals, religious zealots, drug users, athletes, geniuses, nice guys, iceholes and everyone in between.  All the talk about honor and code and commitment in the military is a bunch of bull.  They're just corporate catch phrases dressed up in camouflage.  Always has been, always will be.  For a short time during my first few years in the service, I felt that the uniform made me better than everyone else but eventually I realized it doesn't.  Problem is that there aren't too many people who figure that out and walk around the rest of their miserable lives thinking that society owes them something and that's why so many of the retirees and veterans you meet can be some of the most unbearable pricks you'll ever encounter.

I can't speak for everyone, but being a marine makes me better than everyone. My drill instructor said as much.
"The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.""  R.I.P George.

The POTUS decides what the cost of tuition should be?

MDS

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

First of all how did this devolve into Rome having a hissy fit about veterans? Hold it together man.

Second, I think it's perfectly reasonable to raise the issue of education cost and ask questions about what Obama has or has not done to fend it off or change course.

What he has done is remove banks as a government subsidized middle man to student loans which lowers the cost of student loans. Great. However, that hasn't kept the underlying price of education from continuing to skyrocket and that is something that needs to be addressed.

My issue with this is the implication that a trend of rapidly increasing tuition, something which has been happening for 25 years and has continue over the last four years, is somehow Obama's doing. This is one of those things that drives me crazy about politics. The last four years didn't happen in isolation. There have been decades of trends leading up to this, but it's politically expedient to poach numbers and place blame.

Do I think that Obama (or whoever is president) should endorse tuition reform (or whatever you want to call it)? Sure. But let's address the core issue rather than suggesting irrationally that the last four years were the first time that college tuition has gone up.

Not to say that Rome is completely sane because we all know better (and love him for it), but Crew screwed up the quote a bit. The part about the honor being a joke and all that was Sarge...I thought that was a little more harsh than what Rome said on the last page.

Sarge is just salty and bitter and possibly postal because he got screwed. So he's entitled and that makes sense.

Carry on.

Sooner or later every thread will devolve into Rome having a hissy fit. Get used to it.

I thought it was every thread will devolve into IGY and MDS talking about The Wire.
