I've owned all sorts of computers and nothing comes close to this MacBook quality-wise.  Same goes for the iPhone & all the other shtein we have from Apple.

I admit I'm not a very astute computer guy.  I know enough to get along but I also know quality, fit & finish and Apple stuff has it over everyone else.

Android is kicking Apple's ass.

Not correct.

No?  I heard on the news yesterday that Android is now the dominant/most used OS and that it is still gaining market share.  Here's a link for reference, though I admit it doesn't make the claim I do, it just gives some numbers...over 500 million and growing at 1.3 million activations per day...

I'm still wondering whats going to happen with Samsung's potential injunction on the iPhone5 for LTE chipset patent infringement.  I'd love it if apple got a taste of their own medicine for once.

You would love it if a Korean company caused financial distress for an American one?

Seriously?
Apple fanboys are a joke.  Most apple users have no clue what to do with it, they just like saying Apple.  I'd say 100% of volkswagon owners have iPhones.

Apple OS is USA made, but the phones\ipads are made in China.

The samsung phones may be made in korea, but the iOS is made in the US.

Since the iOS's are both american, you would rather support a Communist country over Korea?  Seriously?

This is all true.  Don't let apple users tell you otherwise.

Their main argument is that iOS is better than droid, but chances are they havent used Jellybean or ice cream sammich.  Droid OS has caught up.

If Apple were getting its ass kicked, the financials wouldn't be so damn good. I'm with Matty in that the Apple fanboys drive me crazy, but the anti-Apple nutjobs are even worse. It's not like there is some dirty secret here - iPhones do not have as much processing power or potential as the top-end Droid phones, but they have power in their uniformity and ease of setup/use. Hate on it all you want... My wife doesn't have to bug me all the time about her phone, and my jailbroken iPhone has very few limits. Best of both worlds.

paco

You have to seperate financials from market share.

Market share, they are getting their butt kicked.  They are dominated by Android.  Its a fact.

Financials, however, are terrific for Apple for two reasons:
1) They have streamlined their manufacturing process similar to how Wal-mart streamlined their product chain.  They are able to get the parts they need both quickly and cheaply.  Its really impressive what they have done on their supply chain side

2) They are able charge a premium on their products due to the apple ecosystem.  An apple product is simply part of the network, so there is value added for that device other than the device it self.

Thats why you are seeing the new iPad sold for more than twice as much as the Nexus 7.  Screen size aside, what they have under the hood is close to being equal.  However the nexus 7 costs $200-$250 while the new iPad is $400-$700

The debate is stupid. They're both tools and can mostly do the same sorts of thing very well. In a lot of ways, they have different audiences. I have an Android, and I think it's great. If I used a bunch of Apple products, there's a good chance I'd have an iPhone, because of the integration. Whatever.

ive never even heard of this new space pad. if i want to get my mom an ipad, will the nexus 7 literally do all the same stuff for a cheaper price? i'm sure i could easily look this up but just tell me.

paco

Depends.  Is she linked into Apple's ecosystem?  If she is, then probably not.

But if she just wants to surf the web and check email, then it would be fine.  The only question you would have to ask yourself then is, is the screen size large enough?

For me, its perfect since I travel with it, it fits well in my hand and find it easy to read books or watch movies on (the larger tablets fatigue my wrists on longer flights).  However I know some people that perfer the larger screen size (ususally these people seem to play higher end android games)

Generally, yes. But if she uses a lot of other Apple products, the iPad would be more integrated with those and the interface would be a little more intuitive. If she doesn't have Apple stuff, though, then the Android would do a ton. She can watch her porn on either.

The Nexus 7 isn't the only other option, by the way. I just bought my dad a 10.1 inch Acer for about $200, and it works like a charm. He has an Android phone, so I was able to get all of his apps and stuff on there very easily.

paco

Sorry if I made it look like that was the only competition.  I only used a nexus 7 since its what I own and am most familiar with (not including my older android tablets).   Samsung also has a really nice tablet (I think its 10 inches) that is competitively priced as well

Just wanted to point it out for Phatty. The Asus was really well reviewed, too. Check out the reviews on CNET and go from there.

I'm seriously considering getting the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 as my next phone, which is comically big for a phone. But I can't shake the desire to get one yet. It's got a 5.5 inch screen, so I'd pretty much be able to retire my tablet altogether. Since using my phone as a phone is at the bottom of my list of shtein I do with the device, I might give it a shot.
