"The Eagles will honor Dawkins on Sept. 30 at Lincoln Financial Field before a game against the Giants and add his name to the team's Honor Roll. Owner Jeff Lurie has said nobody else will wear Dawk's number as long as he owns the team, and it would certainly be deserving if the Eagles formally retire No. 20."

"Brian Dawkins is one of my all-time favorite players and one of the best to ever put on an Eagles uniform. On the field, in many ways, Brian re-invented the safety position. He had the speed and athleticism to line up against the game's best receivers, and was equally effective in the run game. His love for the game was infectious and he poured his entire heart and soul into everything he was doing from the moment he entered the stadium until he left. Everyone who ever watched Brian play saw that and it was impossible not to love that about him. He was one of the best leaders to ever play here." - Eagles Chairman/CEO, Jeffrey Lurie

QuoteDawkins, though, one of the most beloved athletes Philadelphia has ever embraced, made it clear that he was participating in the Eagles' plans because he wanted to show the fans how much he appreciated their support.

QuoteBut Dawkins, who orginally said that he "didn't want to dive back" into the past, made it rather clear that he will never forget how his 13-year run in Philadelphia ended when he was a free agent following the 2008 season and the Eagles offered what he thought was a low-ball deal. He ended up signing a five-year, $17 million contract with the Broncos and played three of those years.

QuoteAnd Dawk connected with this city in ways that very few Eagles, very few athletes in any sport, have ever connected.

It wasn't just the way he played. Ferocious every snap. It wasn't just the way he was accessible to the fans. Warm and cordial every day. It wasn't just the way he led in the locker room. Fiercely supportive of his coaches and teammates during even the most challenging times.

He cared as much as we did, and that's rare. You knew he brought the pain home with him after devastating losses. And you knew he shared the city's joy after huge wins. He wanted to win a Super Bowl for the city and the fans more than for himself.

And in an age where so many pro athletes seem disconnected with their sport and the fans and the city and never seem to let their guard down, Dawk spoke honestly and openly and passionately. He said what fans wanted to hear. And he said what had to be said. Always.

He was one of us. And there's no greater praise you can lavish on a Philadelphia athlete.

From Reuben Frank on Twitter;

Quote"I don't know if I could have come to a better place, a city where they appreciate the brand of football that I put out there. What I turn into on game day, I don't know if there's a truer place for me. Because the fans here, these are people who truly love that type of football. Every football fan loves a big hit. But it goes way beyond that here. Way beyond that. There's a different mentality here. There's a desire among those in the fan base to watch us just demolish somebody, and it's passed down from generation to generation. Yes, they loved it when T.O. (Terrell Owens) was here and Donovan (McNabb) and T.O. were hooking up on big plays and big touchdowns every week. But when you get right down to it, the fans in this city would rather see a big hit than a long run or a big touchdown pass. When you can deliver a bone-jarring, snot-bubbling lick on somebody, it's almost there's something inside the fans that feasts on that. That's what they want. That's the kind of football they want."

Yeah, it sucks, he was the ultimate Eagle. But really, he's done, and we all saw it this year especailly in the NFCCG. If he can milk the Broncos for a few more mil, more power to him.

Is is just me or does anyone else here not really give much of a shtein if he leaves?  Everyone goes eventually and if Dawk can find himself a team that will pay him a big contract one last time then good for him.  And honestly I'd rather have someone who isn't old as farg back there anyway.

Time to move on.

It won't be right to see Dawkins playing for another team, but I'm not going to be upset if and when he goes. The guy has nothing left in the tank. Replacing that isn't going to be a problem. There are any number of guys who can be a non-factor for most of a season. The personality though, that's going to be irreplaceable.

He was cooked anyway.  Whatever, he's in someone else's laundry now.

Farg Dawkins. Farg him and his Hugh Douglas routine. Shame he couldn't retire a couple of years ago when it was clear he was no longer a premiere safety.

Quote from: mpmcgraw on February 28, 2009, 10:04:17 AM
hey maybe now we'll have a FS who can do more than watch the reciever run away from him when he gets matched up on the outside.

Quote from: FastFreddie on February 28, 2009, 10:04:52 AM
They have to move on without him at some point soon.  He was the 2nd best safety on the team last year, and it's not like Mikell is a stud.

QuoteDenver signs free agent safety Brian Dawkins to a five-year, $17 million deal that includes $7.2 million guaranteed. The contract also has escalators that could boost the value of the deal to $27 million over five years, but the deal also could be voided to two years, $9 million.

I love Dawk but cmon :-D

Obviously Dawkins isn't as good as he used to be, but he's still a useful player if used properly

Honestly, he's best used right now standing on the sidelines in those stupid warmup suits.

Quote from: General_Failure on February 28, 2009, 11:25:54 PM
Dawkins would have started, and continued to get worse. Now he'll do it it Denver (until they bench him), and we won't have to think about it too much.

Quote from: shorebird on March 01, 2009, 10:45:18 AM

I disagree. He was at the point were he didn't even try to wrap up when he tackled and was missing half the time. To use your own words, he was terrible on the field most of the year. He made maybe three or four plays all year that I remember. You can blame the play calling all you want, the fact is he is a shell of his former self, and anyone who thinks he should have been overpaid just so you could see him in an Eagles uniform next year needs to stop friggen' whining.

Quote from: MadMarchHare on March 01, 2009, 03:43:51 PM
He wanted a big contract for his twilight, the Eagles fairly and rightfully thought they could do better.  This is really a story?  Who farging cares?

Quote from: FastFreddie on March 01, 2009, 09:05:36 PM
So everyone who is ok with Dawkins leaving is automatically defending the FO for making just a wildly irrational decision, right?  There is absolutely no viable justification for letting Dawkins get paid somewhere else?

Please quote the above and go on the record.  Thanks.

Joselio has that pesky "potential" thing still. Dawkins has a used car lot to run someday soon.

i chalk 90% of that up to a defense mechanism.  he leaves, people are hurt, so they say farg him he sucks anyway.

except for that retard mpmcgraw, keeping his record of the worst sports points ever intact

oh and lol at mmh for questioning whether it's a big story.  farging out of towners.

i actually chalk it up to 100% idiocy on all levels

to me it was a no brainer to keep him as much for his leadership....what he meant to the city...and because they had no plan B to replace him as i was for his level of play....but its hilarious looking back at all the people who said he wasnt just old but he was completely done and horrible...especially after he made two more pro bowls** since then and he retired because of injury not because he couldnt get on the field anymore....if hes healthy he goes into camp this year as the starter on denver or the eagles

to this day i have yet to hear ONE legitimate reason for them to have let him go

**yes i know pro bowls are often suspect but still could people have been more off
