problem is big market teams dont think like that. they either keep buying their way out of problems like the yankees or red sox, or buy themselves into a number of years at the bottom of the division like the cubs.

and especially with the extra playoff team, they would have to be something like 10 games out of the 5 spot at the deadline to think about doing that. and unfortunately they are not THAT bad.

They could sign Hamels to $22mil, Pence to $18mil, and Victorino to $13mil AAV, have Roy's 20 million dollar option vest, and still have $42 million left over in 2014 before the luxury tax tto address what will presumably be needs at 3B, 2B, Catcher, and LF. Which would mean maybe one or 2 stars at those positions and the rest of the money used to fill out the bullpen and such.
