Ron Paul is just a complete disaster.   It's one thing to have libertarian ideals, but it's quite another to be so stubborn in those ideals that you completely ignore reality.

The reality is Pakistan was shielding bin Laden.  Maybe not "officially" but there's no way a guy lives in a compound 1,000 yards from your "West Point" without at least someone in power knowing about it.   Either they were covering their asses quid pro quo-wise or not, but whatever the case, there was no cooperating with Pakistan or alerting them to our intentions.   If we did alert them, bin Laden would still be alive in a farging cave somewhere because it's a 100% fact that he would have been tipped off about us coming.

You'd think a smart guy like Paul would know that, and he probably does, which means he's using this opportunity to politicize something he KNOWS was the only option just to show his contrarianism.

I'm not sure he's being a contrarian, necessarily, but I think he holds his core set of beliefs to a point where it's a drastic detriment of his.

I.E. I agree with him that we should stop playing the role of world's police officer, but I disagree that we should remove every single troop we have from foreign countries (including S Korea etc) which is pretty much the definition of isolationism.

I think he has some base libertarian ideals but he's so inflexible about modifying them and/or making them realistic in the 21st century (like the Osama thing), that it turns him into a bit of a caricature.

To quote Mitch Daniels, "Purity in martyrdom is for suicide bombers." The inability or unwillingness to compromise, while admirable on the surface, is not the sign of a true leader.

He's the first respectable Republican candidate I've seen in, well shtein, I don't remember the last one. McCain almost qualified before he veered hard Right to get the nomination and abandoned all of his credibility. Under a different set of circumstances I might have given Daniels my vote before the Indiana state abortion thing. Now I just see him as someone worth taking seriously, which is the first time I've felt that way about a major republican Presidential candidate in a long time.
