will do, thanks

here's something I don't get:  how I I know the phone will work with my carrier?  can I buy any phone and put my chip in it?

For what you want you'll probably need a Nextel plan.

I'm already on AT&T, and not leaving because my number is part of a large family plan we've got.

So what I need to do is find a phone that's compatible with AT&T, I gather.

I'm not interested in getting a "free" phone from them this time, even though I'm due, because I don't want a fancy phone.  I don't need internet service in a ditch.  I do need a camera though, so I can take pictures of the unidentified line I just put a shovel through.

What a pain in the ass.

Well, it's hard to find phones that work on the little-known AT&T network.  You're probably SOL.

What you're saying is, I should probably just give up?  Aight.

Maybe write a country song about it.

I need a new mobile.  I want one that is durable, works well as a phone, has a decent camera on it.  After that, i don't much care about other options.  I'm not going to pay for a data plan, so it doesn't have to be a smart phone.  Wi-fi would be nice though, so I could browse when I happen to be in a place with free wi-fi.

Any suggestions?

Do they even make phones that have wifi capability that aren't smartphones which require a data plan?

Yeah, I'm not sure how much it depends on the carrier. I'm in the exact same boat Dio, I just went out last night to BB and a Verizon store. Both had same line and prices for Verizon, who I've always liked as a carrier (and never liked any other carrier I've had otherwise).

There's not much available, maybe 3-4 models that cost next to nothing with a 2 year plan. There's an LG Cosmos and Samsung Intensity ll that look like the best bets though only have a basic camera (1.3mp). They do have a slide keyboard and card slot.

They are trying to make money by funneling people into buying $10-15/month data plans for other phones and the "insurance" over 2 years is 2/3 the cost of a new plan at BB, so it's really a ripoff unless it's for some kid that will probably go swimming with it or something. A home charger and a book are the only other things that come included but at least now the earphone jacks are somewhat universal rather than having to buy their particular proprietary brand.

No, not really.

Didn't think so.  Sounds like maybe the best option for Dio is to just get a new, basic phone with a good camera and buy and iPad.

I recently heard somewhere that there is a LG Cosmos and Samsung Intensity that has wifi capability, a camera, and doesn't require a data plan.

PoopyfaceMcGee

I would like to reiterate that I really don't think they make phones with WiFi capability that do not require a data plan.

You're farged, Dio.

I don't quite understand what you're getting at.  Let's try and stay on topic here, shall we?
