As Week 1 approaches, there appears to be a vibe that the Eagles will take a step back this season. That the Super Bowl is a pipe dream and that just making the playoffs would be an acceptable goal.

Maybe it's because the team, for the first time this century, has a new quarterback or because the offensive line is thin or because the average age of the roster is half that of Jamie Moyer.

And maybe all of those points are valid.

But if you're looking for a reason to believe the Eagles will improve upon last season, it's this: the defense. The sapless state of last season's squad was symbolized by the stunning return of Jeremiah Trotter.

Unfortunately, my last vivid memory of Trotter in an Eagles jersey was watching him try and cover (I beleive it was) Zach Miller on a 3rd down play against the Raiders last year and he was just beaten so badly that it's not even worth trying to make up some cute analogy for it.

Eagles made a play for Packers offensive lineman — 2:17 p.m.

The Philadelphia Eagles tried to acquire Green Bay Packers G/C Jason Spitz prior to last weekend's roster cutdown, the Journal Sentinel report. The paper reported the Eagles offered a sixth-round pick, but Green Bay turned down the offer.

League sources told FOXSports.com the Eagles have had their eye on Spitz for several weeks. In fact, Philadelphia had serious interest in him prior to the 2006 NFL Draft.

As noted previously by FOXSports.com, Green Bay did not want to trade the interior offensive lineman because they value his versatility.
