so if demps is gone you have mikell four rookies and a converted qb

So you're saying that because he was drafted in the 7th round, he won't be good by default...yet our current best safety made the team as an UDFA.

We're talking about the 4th safety spot....there's no "being behind the 8 ball" there, whoever is having the best camp and showing they can play in this defense is going to get the job. They're not fighting for a starting spot, they're fighting to see who gets to come in after Allen and Macho get injured. The only other factors that come in have already been mentioned...that he can easily be stashed away on IR or the practice squad, which is what gives Demps the advantage. It's his only advantage, because his play and knowledge of the playbook that he should have over a rookie certainly aren't separating him from the pack

The year Mikell made the team as the 3rd safety, the starters were a veteran and a 2nd year, 2nd round draft pick who had only started 4 games the year prior. So Michael Lewis had 4 starts on Nate Allen, with maybe half the athleticism. That's certainly the year to take the "risk" of having an UDFA as your back up.
