Just got more info on the discretionary spending freeze. It entails freezing spending at current levels and is likely to save about $250 billion, which is 1/6th of the deficit. I that that's a very good idea. Not because it will solve all of the $$ problems but because 1/6th is a damn good start and sends the right message.

EDIT: Correction, the freeze applies to $250 billion worth of the government's spending. It wouldn't necessarily save $250 billion. Either way, I would say that this proposal lies somewhere between meaningless-symbolic-gesture and solution-to-a-problem.

Now I'm reading conflicting reports so just ignore my original post... I read that this only applies to $250 billion and I read that it applies to $447 billion and would save $250 billion. So clearly the details aren't agreed upon yet. As you were...

Um, I was talking about McCain, and who cares about success in school? Isn't Bush the only president ot get an MBA? and look at the mess it left us in.

Huh, I thought I remembered Obama taking notes and smirking at McCain. A thousand apologies, though I don't think that McCain is an idiot either. Just a panderer who sold his soul for the Republican nomination.

Also, I would argue vehemently that there is a massive difference between an MBA and a degree from Harvard Law. The best MBA programs in the country are still widely considered to be an extension of the undergraduate party time. And I'm pretty sure that Bush had his academic records sealed at Yale, which doesn't inspire a belief that he was a stellar student to begin with.

I think Obama was smirking at McCain because he knew there was no way in hell that that guy was going to beat him.

i think that anyone who is unwilling to make concessions, be reasonable or listen to opposing opinions simply because they have a different political affiliation is looney.

severe partisanship like that is just as stupid and unproductive as racism.

wow comparing stubborness to hating and killing people because of their skin color....nice

and while there are idiots out there that do do it most people refuse to listen to opposing political opinions because they dont agree with them not because of the persons party affiliation

i dont disagree with right wingers because they are republicans i do it because of their many backwards prehistoric beliefs

I only find this interesting because of the context...

David Brooks wrote today that Obama's bank reform proposals are 'quite reasonable'. Brooks is a very conservative columnist so that's a pretty big indication that these proposals could and should garner a lot of support. However, Brooks' statement of approval was buried in a piece that was dedicated to pre-emptively setting the stage to bash Obama for being a populist. The whole thing reads like he couldn't stand to write something positive about Obama, despite his support of the President's latest initiative.

brooks is not very conservative...and in fact used to be a liberal

hes a moderate republican in the david gergen mold

he often gets labeled farther to the right than he is because hes one of the lone right leaning voices in a very left leaning newspaper

That's a fair assessment based on what I've read of his writing.

Uh-oh.

I believe I've passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage
I found that just surviving was a noble fight.
I once believed in causes too,
I had my pointless point of view,
And life went on no matter who was wrong or right.
