obama to attempt to freeze all non security discretionary spending for the next three years

He seems to be talking big right now, it would be nice if he actually did it.

A flat out freezing of government spending is a terrible idea. Getting spending under control and justifying the spending while attempting to pay for it is an excellent idea. Of course this one post is my only source so I have no idea what the details are.I can't fault the spirit of the idea that's for sure... it's interesting to say the least.

yeah, i don't know the specifics of the plan either, but to flat out stop spending gov't money during a recession isn't going to help stimulate the economy, but in fact, will halt the (little) positive momentum the economy has been picking up in recent months.

MMH

I would think the idea is to freeze spending at its current level, not stop spending.  But yeah, that is the ugly stepchild to getting spending under control.

As for Pelosi, she's Newt from the left.  My way or the highway, and I'll squash anyone in my way, regardless of their party affiliation.  She represents the absolute worst of politics in this country today.

that makes her partisan not looney
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

im the board pharmacist....always one step above yous

Sgt PSN

i think that anyone who is unwilling to make concessions, be reasonable or listen to opposing opinions simply because they have a different political affiliation is looney.

severe partisanship like that is just as stupid and unproductive as racism.

Munson

The difference is there's Dems in the govt that are all over the spectrum...far left looneys like her and middle of the road guys that the far left needs to negotiate with just to get a bill passed....The right wing seems to have more of their party concentrated more to the right with a low amount of moderates.

Kind of sucks.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

phillymic2000

I doubt this will happen, or at the most it will save next to nothing. This is starting to sound like good old chicago politics, tell the people what they want to hear and then string them along. Wait a second, this is politics as usual, nothing to see here folks, carry on.

Kind of hard to get shtein done when you've got 40% of the people in your government refusing to budge on any issue.

Just sayin.

Jon Stewart is tearing apart the SC lt. governor for basically saying starve the poor so they won't breed :-D (not really waht he was saying, but still hilarious)

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Just got more info on the discretionary spending freeze. It entails freezing spending at current levels and is likely to save about $250 billion, which is 1/6th of the deficit. I that that's a very good idea. Not because it will solve all of the $$ problems but because 1/6th is a damn good start and sends the right message.

EDIT: Correction, the freeze applies to $250 billion worth of the government's spending. It wouldn't necessarily save $250 billion. Either way, I would say that this proposal lies somewhere between meaningless-symbolic-gesture and solution-to-a-problem.

Bill Press was just talking about how the spending freeze idea was brought up by McCain and dismissed by Obama. I still would love to know what that idiot was writing down during the debates, he would write something and then look up with a retarded smile on his face, maybe he just had gas.

There's a big difference between freezing ALL non-security, non-entitlement spending and freezing discretionary spending.

Also, try to talk like a big boy. Obama was editor of the Harvard Law Review, which means that he was one of the top 5 or so law students in the country. He was a civil law professor. Calling him an idiot is childish and laughably inaccurate.

Um, I was talking about McCain, and who cares about success in school? Isn't Bush the only president ot get an MBA? and look at the mess it left us in.

Huh, I thought I remembered Obama taking notes and smirking at McCain. A thousand apologies, though I don't think that McCain is an idiot either. Just a panderer who sold his soul for the Republican nomination.

Also, I would argue vehemently that there is a massive difference between an MBA and a degree from Harvard Law. The best MBA programs in the country are still widely considered to be an extension of the undergraduate party time. And I'm pretty sure that Bush had his academic records sealed at Yale, which doesn't inspire a belief that he was a stellar student to begin with.
