That looks hilarious for all the wrong reasons.

The man. The myth. The legend.

I just finished Power and Terror: Noam Chomsky. I've seen a couple Chomsky-focused documentaries that are essentially just 75 minute knob-slobbing fests and this one was no different. Terrible music, lots of aging hippies falling all over themselves to talk to him, etc etc.

The movie was crap. Chamsky himself is a fairly incredible dude. The man has a towering intellect which he uses as a global activist against imperialistic governments and fear mongering (he's also a linguistics professor). He's considered one of the top intellectuals in the word right now and has been mis-labeled a liberal by people who can't fully comprehend what he stands for. His take on the US' role in the world is highly critical, but essentially his perspective is not that the US should abstain from battling terrorism, rather he points out that the US has itself actually sponsored terrorism in many places across the world for decades and that we are hypocrites until we can apply the same standards to ourselves that we deign to apply to others.

Anyway, despite his harsh criticism he constantly points out the fact that the US is far more civilized now to its own people and to people outside of the US than it ever has been. He sees active improvement on that front and so in the face of criticism he remains an optimist. It's an interesting take.

Literate people should skip the movie and read some of his writing on power, fear and post-9-11 America.

Links...

9-11 (not the most original title).

Understanding power.

Manufacturing consent (probably his most well known book).

The culture of terrorism (written in 1988).

Actually, fargit, just go here and pick out titles that interest you. The dude is old and loves to write and is extremely active so the list goes on and on.

And here are a whole slew of articles he's written which may be more palatable and require less buying of shtein...

my re-entry into netflixdom did not start off well as i accidentily got the 1970's version of inglorious bastiches instead of the tarantino johnson....but my second movie was very very good

the reader - a movie centered around the holocaust but not about the holocaust...its really about people and the choices they make or are forced to make or feel they have to make...its not a movie for everyone its made for adults with adult movie tastes and its also not movie whos plot i wanna go into as its difficult to do without giving to much away...one thing i will say without trying to be to much of a movie nerd is that it contains the best cinematography ive seen in a picture in quite some time

the reader - 7.5/10

I watched MST3000 the Movie this morning. It was retarded but I chuckled at times. I loved that show when I was a nerdy kid. As a nerdy adult it was more nostalgically good than actually good.

I received Inglorious Basterds, Up and The Hangover for christmas.

I have Maria Full of Grace, District 9 and Slumdog Millionaire from netflix.

Lots of movie watching to do. You all care deeply.

Youth in Revolt was mediocre.  I wouldn't go see it unless you're looking for an adequate date movie to take the better half to.  If that's the case, you could do worse, but it's not that funny.

Anyone see Mr. Brooks? Just saw it, thought it was pretty good, the million subplots got kind of annoying.

The BIGSTUD

Saw it. Pretty decent, but Dane Cook is laughably bad.
Calling it right on the $ since day one.
Just pointing laughing, and living it up while watching the Miami Heat stink it up.

Avatar - my eye balls shot so many loads during this movie. eyegasm after eyegasm. best CGI done ever. See it in 3D. It is a must see just for the visuals and actually the story line was better than I was expecting . 5/5 - just for taking the visuals to a whole new level of awesomeness  :yay :yay
