QuoteKyle Turley experiencing potentially serious brain issues
Posted by Mike Florio on September 18, 2009 2:49 PM ET
Former NFL player Kyle Turley, a 1998 first-round pick who developed a reputation for erratic and explosive behavior while playing (which prompted him us to slap him with the nickname "Crazy Joe Davola"), currently is experiencing very real health issues, possibly due to a career of hits to the head.

Turley, according to Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports, could be in the process of developing Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a degenerative neurological condition that may have contributed to the deaths of former NFL players Andre Waters and Justin Strzelczyk.

The strangest aspect of the situation is that Turley doesn't regard himself as someone who had a problem with concussions.

"I never considered myself a guy that had a lot of head injuries," Turley told Silver.  "But the doctors I've seen are very concerned about my past history, and when I look back on some of what I experienced, it makes me angry.  Guys are going crazy, and my wife and I just had a baby boy.  I don't want that to happen to me."

That said, he had one fairly significant concussion in 2003, which resulted in some fairly bizarre activity after the game, even when judged by Turley's typical helmet-throwing, threatening-to-kill-Mike-Martz standards.

"I went into the shower, and as the story was told to me later, I was sitting at my locker, butt-naked, when our owner [Georgia Frontiere] came in to congratulate us," Turley said.   "I don't remember doing this, but everybody said I stood up and hugged her, totally naked, right there in the middle of the room."

And, contrary to Turley's belief that he didn't have many head injuries, his words suggest otherwise.  Apart from the concussion that exposed the late Mrs. Frontiere to one of the lesser-known hazards of owning an NFL team, Turley said he experienced "'dings' where I'd get cross-eyed and not see straight for a whole series. ... I'd see three guys for every real one, and I'd say, '[Expletive] it, I'm gonna hit the guy in the middle.'  That happened to me maybe two or three times every season."

So how bad do I want Rex Ryan and Mike Singletary as the coach of the Eagles right now. Is it too early to tell if either of them are any good? Yes. Is it already obvious that they are emotional, hard-nosed, defense-first, run-the-ball coaches? Yes. Is asking a question and then answering it yourself gay? Shut up.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

Ryan gave a game ball to the Jets fans.

Quote"I think our fans are huge in this victory," Ryan said. "In fact, we're giving a game ball to our fans. It will go up in our trophy case. I thought they were the difference. Any time you can hold Brady to under 50-percent completions, that is saying a lot.

"My first victory at home. I never saw that crowd in preseason. It was pretty intense out there. It was hard to communicate, but I thought our guys did a great job. It was loud, and that is what I was talking about. Make it miserable . I can't tell you the last time New England has been 0-for-3 in the red zone."

Agreed. Singletary's rants last year were great. He's turned them around.

And my man love for Rex Ryan continues to grow. I caught him on Mike & Mike this morning and they asked him to comment on the Crabtree tampering charges. He said "My response is not suitable for radio. I'll let the NFL figure that stuff out. But I wish we played them this weekend"

i know that ryan's just trying to get the fans fired up and all that but it's crap like that and the voicemail sent to season ticket holders that encourages the "we" mentality among fans.  of course, it's a smart play on his part because it gives fans a sense of inclusion and to feel like they are actually part of the team, which is all that most fans really want to begin with, but it still doesn't change the fact that they ultimately have little to no impact on the outcome of a game.  but even as i speak, there's 65000 jets fans walking around today who feel like they actually accomplished something yesterday.

having said that, he's only 2 games into his head coaching career and is already better than reid.

and singletary seems to have turned chicken shtein into chicken salad out in san fran.  luckily they play in the weakest division in the nfl so if he can keep them playing like they are, he should cruise through that division.

Ryan's fan service will wear thin pretty soon, I think.

The man. The myth. The legend.

Does the 'we mentality' bother you enough to write a whole paragraph about it? It's embarrassing to hear people talk like that, but isn't fan inclusion and deference something we should praise teams for rather than discourage?

yeah,  the we mentallity annoys me to no end.  always has.  and i thought i did a nice job of limiting my rant to a single paragraph.  next time i won't hold back.

Quotebut isn't fan inclusion and deference something we should praise teams for rather than discourage?

probably.  it's better than the cold shoulder that we get from the eagles but it's still annoying none the less.

oh well.

PhillyPhreak54

I'm going to start saying we, just to induce Sarge rants!

Sgt PSN

if i ranted everytime one of you knuckleheads said "we" i'd be ranting from dusk til dawn.  for the most part, i accept it as normal/pathetic fan behavior and go about my business.  but every now and then i need a quick vent.

PhillyPhreak54

I usually don't drop we because it annoys me too. But when you and igy get riled, its good for some amusement

Jewelry worth $400,000 was stolen from Whitner's home while he was at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday.

2 weeks in a row that a bills player has had his private property violated.

400k in jewelry?  for real?  that's some stupid shtein to be spending that much money on

you'd think he'd at least drop 10k into a nice safe bolted to the floor...idiot
