Seriously this is a great article about Health Care and how better health care won't actually make us any healthier, but making ourselves healthier as a population will greatly reduce the cost of Health Care.

The irony is that though the health-care system might not make individuals much healthier, improving the health of individuals might do a lot to ease the problems of the health system. Health promotion could help health reform. At the end of the day, costs are going to come down in one of three ways: We will buy less care, give fewer people access to care, or need less care. Indeed, estimates hold that between 20 percent and 30 percent of the rise in health costs since 1987 is attributable to the doubling of obesity rates over the same period. That's spending driven by need. Reduce need, and there's a good case to be made that you can reduce spending.

We have a 600 page thread about politics on this board. We have a 60 page thread about the dire financial straights the country is in. We have a 20 page thread about working out and dieting. I would say that anyone with half a brain should care about improving our health because it impacts everything about everyone's life.

shtein, I'm hardly a picture of health what with my various addictions and hideous diet, and I care about this. I don't want to pay for Tubby McGoo to get treated for diabetes for 40 years just because he's too stupid to put down the Twinkies.
