Hypocrisy from the Right.

The last 8 years have not quite pushed me further Left of where I was before, but the Bush years HAVE managed to completely disgust me when it comes to this country's Right-ists.

I really like this analogy:

QuoteFinally, yes, we can imagine ticking-time-bomb situations where regular interrogation methods work too slowly and extreme measures might prove helpful. But this premise bears the same relationship to the question of legalizing torture as the morality of stealing a loaf of bread to feed your starving family does to the question of legalizing theft.

I agree that the money isn't spent as efficiently as it could or should be. In fact the biggest thing about Obama's campaign that I liked was his promise to comb the budget and eliminate wasteful programs. It's a good idea and it's badly needed.

much like you, i really bought into obama's plan to reduce wasteful gov't spending and i hope it's something he's able to follow through on.

Obama proposes cutting $17Billion in wasteful programs.

This is a really great first step (assuming that Congress actually approves the cuts). Might be the happiest I've been since the man was elected. Following through on campaign promises and trying to improve the efficiency of the government? Nice.

Shortly after class, an economics student approaches his economics professor and says, "I don't understand this stimulus bill. Can you explain it to me?" The professor replied, "I don't have any time to explain it at my office, but if you come over to my house on Saturday and help me with my weekend project, I'll be glad to explain it to you."

The student agreed. At the agreed-upon time, the student showed up at the professor's house. The professor stated that the weekend project involved his backyard pool. They both went out back to the pool, and the professor handed the student a bucket. Demonstrating with his own bucket, the professor said, "First, go over to the deep end, and fill your bucket with as much water as you can." The student did as he was instructed. The professor then continued, "Follow me over to the shallow end, and then dump all the water from your bucket into it." The student was naturally confused, but did as he was told.

The professor then explained they were going to do this many more times, and began walking back to the deep end of the pool. The confused student asked, "Excuse me, but why are we doing this?" The professor matter-of-factly stated that he was trying to make the shallow end much deeper. The student didn't think the economics professor was serious, but figured that he would find out the real story soon enough. However, after the 6th trip between the shallow end and the deep end, the student began to become worried that his economics professor had gone mad. The student finally replied, "All we're doing is wasting valuable time and effort on unproductive pursuits. Even worse, when this process is all over, everything will be at the same level it was before, so all you'll really have accomplished is the destruction of what could have been truly productive action!" The professor put down his bucket and replied with a smile, "Congratulations. You now understand the stimulus bill."

There are so many things wrong with that analogy that I don't even know where to begin. Not to mention that it seems like it is supposed to be funny, and isn't remotely. Fail.

oh and so did you

and as majority in here are obama supporters (as am I), lets not get all giggly about the stimulus package just yet and lets not have our blinders on as well. although he is following through on his words to cut unnecessary federal programs--which is complete opposite of our previous pres, there also could be plenty of drawbacks to this that could bring us back to square one

ice grillin you

didnt read one single word of it

and i havent heard ANYONE on her get giggly about the stimulus...youre just making up stuff to create a reason to post whatever garbage you just posted

local news just showed about 2 minutes of his address a few minutes ago.  2 programs he specifically mentioned were the national long-distance radio agency.......or some crap like that.....who have an annual budget of 35mil.  said that they have been irrellevent for quite some time now thanks to gps and satellites.  boom.  outta here.  another one was the national literacy council.  said approx 50% of their 6mil budget is spent on overhead rather than actually addressing illiteracy and that he will cut that program and allocate the money to the dept of education who spends their money more efficiently.

Right. Let's not get it twisted. I'm not in love with the stimulus. It wasn't big enough to be immediately effective and the stuff that was in it was watered down and included a lot of wasteful crap. So it was insufficient in two very different ways. My problem isn't with mocking the stimulus. My problem is with that analogy which is completely inaccurate.
