Obama creates faith-based office with wide mission

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090205/ap_on_go_pr_wh/rel_obama_faith_based

Quote
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has signed an order to establish a White House office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

The office is broader than one in the administration of former President George W. Bush which just dealt with faith-based initiatives.

Before signing the order in the Oval Office, Obama told a prayer breakfast it would show not favoritism to any religious group and would adhere to the strict separation of church and state.

Contradiction.

the key difference btwn how bush used this office and how oabam plans to is that barry wants touse these groups as a means to get help to those who need it where as the bush admin was using the office to help religious groups they agreed with (as well as helping people)

obama has also included a legal wing the office so that it can monitor and act on church state issues...bush had no such wing

Who cares? The Government should not be in the business of recognizing, let alone giving money to, religious organizations. Establishing official offices to do that is laughably unconstitutional.

Here is a horrible example of the Bush legacy.  He was allowed to do so many unprecedented things, it was inevitable that some of them would be kept no matter how opposed to him his replacement might be.  Even as Obama repudiates Bush programs and policies by the fistful, there are and will be executive power grabs that Bush made which Obama will keep, or even expand.

At some point in this thread I made this very point. The real issue with the Bush Years is that there is almost no way to give back power once it has been taken. No matter who won, those precedents were set and until there are laws passed specifically to reverse them they are here to stay.

it started under clinton

god is so prevalent in american culture that the office is never going away....at least barry is making sure the money will be given to ALL religious groups AND secular organizations rather than just giving money to religious groups of his administrations choice

notice its now the office of faith based and neighborhood partnerships...i wish it wasnt there but you have to throw the zealouts a bone and have the words faith based in its title and appoint some ministers and the such on its council to keep them happy

and the legal review is key...it will give oversight in ensuring that the office doesnt abuse the church state seperation...barry even signed an executive order today requiring that the office go to the attorney general for guidance on constitutinal issues that might arise if the office blurs the line btwn church and state

it could be way way worse and it was less than a month ago

An example of politics actually working towards something useful.

QuoteSen. Evan Bayh, D-Indiana, said there is a "backbone" to a deal, but the details were being worked out between the 12 Democrats and five Republicans at the meeting.
