From what I understand the 'confederate' flag that is flown today was never used by the confederacy at any point.
It came into existence after the civil war was over, so basically it is just an invented 'I hate darkies' symbol.

It was used, primarily as a naval jack and battle flag, during the Civil War.  It wasn't the official national flag, though.
