i dont get the age thing...why would it be a bad thing if they are underage...to me its more impressive that some babies beat everyone...id be embarrassed if i was the us and won my gold medal that way but id be doubly embarrassed that you got waxed by some middle schoolers

In gymnastics, the lighter/smaller you are...less developed...the more advantage you have. Its easier to get height on your routines because you are lighter and smaller. Your body becomes MUCH different as a girl when you hit puberty (and its not just boobs, its the extra weight in the hip area and your body just changes immensely). There is a HUGE advantage to being a 14 year old compared to an 18-20 year old in women's gymnastics.

MOST 20 year olds would get waxed by a kid in middle school in gymnastics because of this.

They specifically changed the rule to stop what was essentially child abuse - forcing kids to damage their bodies and psyches long-term.

Of course almost every gymnast in the Olympics (yes, there are some exceptions) has been doing gymnastics virtually nonstop since they were little kids anyway, and the sport of gymnastics has numerous championships and other competitions with identical routines for "juniors" who can be very young.

The minimum age limit is not a way to stop child abuse... it's a way to avoid exposing it too blatantly by having billions around the world see little girls (and sickly-looking late-puberty teenagers) working their asses off in the Olympics while being yelled at by insane parents and potentially insane coaches. Instead that crap is shuffled off to the junior competitions that aren't really watched by those not in the gymnastics world.

Bryan Clay Takes Decathlon Gold

Mr. Clay said that if he won a gold medal in the decathlon he would consider trying out a new sport to prove his mettle as a great all-around athlete -- namely, a tryout with the National Football League. Given his speed and his jumping ability, he thinks he could return kickoffs and punts, or have a go at wide receiver.

Though he says he has no idea if he can handle the hard hits in the NFL -- or hold on to the ball, for that matter -- there's no question he has the athletic prowess. In June, The Wall Street Journal met up with Mr. Clay on the campus of Azusa Pacific University, where he was being assessed by Nike's SPARQ, an athletic training outfit that tests football, baseball, basketball and soccer players. Mr. Clay was at the top of the charts in nearly all categories.

His 40-yard dash time of 4.38, which he did without practicing, was comparable to that of top NFL running backs and wide receivers, who train in the event for months to improve their times. And his standing vertical leap of 43.5 inches compared to the best NBA players in history.

I already like him more than Reggie Brown.

Cuban Taekwondo athlete banned fro life from all international events for kicking ref

BEIJING (AP) A Cuban taekwondo athlete and his coach were banned for life after Angel Matos kicked the referee in the face following his bronze-medal match disqualification.

Cuban coach Leudis Gonzalez offered no apology for Matos' actions during the men's over-80 kg (176 pounds) match.

Matos was winning 3-2, with 1:02 in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan's Arman Chilmanov. He was sitting there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.

Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked referee Chakir Chelbat of Sweden. Matos then spat on the floor and was escorted out.

"He was too strict," Gonzalez said, referring to the decision to disqualify Matos. Afterward, he charged the match was fixed, accusing the Kazakhs of offering him money.

"This is a strong violation of the spirit of taekwondo and the Olympic Games. The sanctions are the following and are effective immediately: Lifetime ban of the coach and athlete in all championships sanctioned by the (World Taekwondo Federation) and at the same time, all records of this athlete at the Beijing Games will immediately be erased," said the announcer, reading a WTF release.

In his first match, Matos defeated Italy's Leonardo Basile, then beat China's Liu Xiaobo 2-1 in the quarterfinals. But he lost to South Korean Cha Dong-min in the semis to land in the bronze-medal match.

"To me it was obvious he was unable to continue," Chilmanov said. "His toe on his left foot was broken."

Matos won the gold medal in this division at the 2000 Sydney Games, dedicating the victory to his mother, who died on the day of the opening ceremony. At the 2004 Athens Games, he finished 11th.

Matos' tantrum followed a day of confusion on the mats.

Earlier Saturday, China's double gold medalist Chen Zhong crashed out in the quarterfinals after initially being declared the winner. It was the first time a match result had been overturned since taekwondo became an official Olympic sport in 1990.
